How one man founded modern brain surgery
Revisado: 03-17-25
An impressive stroll through the state of medicine in the early 20th century. Highly recommended for anyone interested in medicine, surgery, or neurosurgery. Harvey Cushing’s accomplishments remain astounding and should serve as a guide to what is possible for one person to achieve when they tune out distractions.

Historia
Not just the United States, but the entire world, remembers that fateful November day back in 2018 when Al Qaeda terrorists held the entire nation hostage in exchange for the public disclosure of an anti-terrorist bioweapon that may not have even existed. In that darkest hour, salvation came not from the United States government, but from fantasy government. This cabinet of independent thinkers from Naperville, Illinois - a librarian, a customer service representative, a gas station owner, and an obsessive gamer - was led by insurance adjustor and President Jay Weise.

An excellent listen
Revisado: 05-18-21
Edison McDaniels narrates this "alternate alternate" history, which tells the story of a hostage situation in the real world that was resolved by a group of players in a fantasy government game. The story is written as though it were a work of nonfiction, complete with footnotes. McDaniels drops these asides directly into the narration with such skill that they sound like they're actually part of the text. McDaniels's strong and steady narration gives this story the gravitas necessary to convince listeners that these events could have actually happened. He deftly switches from impartial reporter voice to the voices of the characters so smoothly that the audiobook sounds like a genuine audio documentary that could show up on weekend public radio.

A very versatile author

An interesting collection of short stories, some quite horrific and serious, others less so, even comic. All are well written and well voiced. I love it when a talented writer employs an equally talented narrator to bring his words to audio.
A very imaginative collection that will keep you entertained for the duration. Well done.

Horrific science! I loved it.

I could see this working very nicely as a stage play. The action all takes place in one room, a lab straight out of the bowels of hell. Very well done. And the narration is excellent.
If you have 34 minutes to kill, you could do a helluva lot worse. Just listen. And then again. And again.
Highly recommended.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Too long, too banal
Revisado: 10-24-19
Not a fan of this one and I love King in general. This just all seemed rather pointless. The story is richly detailed, too much so. I doubt all of this would have been accepted by an editor if the ink wasn’t Stephen King’s. The story is long and mostly rather flat, filled with an array of too many characters, most unnecessary.
I had a hard time getting into this, and finished only because I could listen on a long flight.
Not a fan of the narrator. Probably chosen for the younger character voices, his narration lacked life and feeling, especially with the older, more mature adults. He is facile with voices, less so at imbuing them with character and pathos.
Can’t really recommend the story or the narration. The writing is top notch, as usual, but King needs to realize that not every little thing needs explaining.

Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.
