DNF. If you love Nicholas Sparks or just need a good, cathartic 10 hour cry, you may like this. From beginning to end it is a a tale of romanticized angst and tragedy. A few hours in, it definitely hit my tragedy porn limit and ...I mean, I am not sure what all happens in the last 7 hours, but I could not muster the enthusiasm to find out. Thank goodness this was a freebie for me.

This book tries to be both a friends to lovers romance and soft-core porn. It fails impressively at both. The plot is an afterthought and other than the constant refrain of "my best friend" there is little compelling evidence of a friendship with a long history. The sex and discussion surrounding it are more weird than hot.

This was cute, and parts of it were laugh out loud funny. Rarely does a book capture the world of teachers very well, and this book did in the first half. Without spoiling anything, the main conflict in this book also has promise for a while. Then, a little more than midway through, the plot seems to lose its way and devolves into a series of semi-serious, semi-comedic scenes that don't ultimately tie the story together satisfactorily. Then a pedantic ending is slapped on, and that's it. This book deserves a better second half than it got. If the second half were rewritten, I would give it another shot!

This novel goes on too long, and the romance is juvenile and weird. This wants to be a story about a Dominant/Submissive dynamic, but it doesn't commit and just ends up being odd. It often sounds like an editor put comments in the margins and instead of fixing plot points the author just snarkily wrote a justification for the plot hole into the text.

This was a freebie I picked up from Audible. It was surprisingly good! I agree with others that the narration was strong and the story was totally enjoyable. It was a great blend of thriller and romance without overwhelming chauvinism or Snow White overtones.

Of the romance that has come out lately, this is a strong showing. If you like the other STEM romances from Ali Hazelwood, you should enjoy this one.

This novel tells the stories of several women struggling to balance careers, children, friendships and their personal lives. It resolves these balance issues by encouraging downgrading careers and committing to heteronormative, male head of household relationships. The refrain is that women are happiest having babies and being at home "not leaving their baby at daycare for someone else to raise while they work 60-70 hours per week", which is basically a quote from the book that shows up ....myriad times. The terrible life choices that lead a woman to be a partner in a law firm in her mid 30s are fundamentally incompatible with love and motherhood, as evidenced by the fact that she starts having, gasp, lunch with some dude who then comes on to her. Thus, Eve is guilty of an emotional affair for which she must repent by losing a pregnancy, downgrading her career and deferring to her insecure partner. And everything is as it should be. That is ONE storyline, perhaps the most overt. If 1950's social norms are your thing, then this is for you. If you like to feel guilty about being a woman and doing anything besides staying at home, raising kids and going to church, this is for you. If your identity IS the aforementioned and you want that affirmed, this is for you. If you have even an ounce of post 60's feminism in your soul, this will probably make you want to throw things....I recommend the book, if you have it.

The stilted reading honestly sounds robotic. Another review says it sounds like Alexa is reading, and it does. The story itself is just a collection of Romance tropes applied to a character that doesn't make any sense (female lead). She seems young, immature and insipid, but she is supposedly a doctor, and an experienced adult who has chosen to surrogate a baby. She behaves like a 15 year old, so when there is any sexual/romantic content, it just feels uncomfortable and kind of gross.

This book is a cute slow burn, though the protagonists are a bit immature for their ages. It tries a bit too hard to have a social justice theme, and the integration is just sort of clunky. The writing is inconsistent and there are some vocabulary issues. The narrators don't help, as both tend to trip over vocabulary and syntax frequently.

The story has some sexiness potential. The choice of the male narrator is unfortunate, since I think he reduces the sexiness by how he voices the male character.

It's totally ok. It isn't something I am likely to revisit or something I would want to spend a credit on.

Sex devoid of love, and a broken power dynamic

So, what you should understand is that this isn't a love story. This is a story about a horny priest who fetishizes confession and zeroes in a a vulnerable woman as the object of his desire. The sexual objectification of her happens long before any relationship could possibly develop. It happens before he even SEES this specific woman. The fact that the priest is just hard up is evident in his banter with his brothers, in his adolescent need for dozens of cold showers per day, in his fantasies about light BDSM in the sanctuary with this semi-anonymous woman. Could it be read as a critique of abstinence in the priesthood? I suppose...but then the critique would be that it leads to predatory behavior...or attracts predators, both of which render the male protagonist pretty irredeemable. For it to be sexy, from my perspective, Poppy would have to be a much less infantalized female lead with some legitimate agency. If she were - if she were a woman who seduced an attractive young priest- then the plot would register as salacious, perhaps, but much more "hot" as an adult romance. As it is, this story is not redemptive or liberating for anyone involved...not the priest, not the female lead, not the Church...it is just a story about manipulative sex and a male lead who mistakes his sexual urges for meaningful connection with another human. If you are just looking for graphic discussions of and references to sex, devoid of relational depth, this book may appeal. However, if you need a love story to go with your smut, this book won't deliver that, and may actually be disturbing. If MY friend or daughter were Poppy, I would steer her to run fast in the opposite direction of this "love" interest.
