Historia
What could be easier than preventing a servant girl from marrying a prince, especially for 3 clever witches? But Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick face more than they bargained for when they journey to the distant city of Genua. For one thing, their power is limited to Mrs. Gogol's weak voodoo spells, a one-eyed cat, and a second-hand magic wand that only works on pumpkins. Furthermore, the Godmother has made Destiny an offer it can't refuse. Do servant girls have to marry the prince?

Granny Weatherwax Rocks!
Revisado: 09-19-12
I'm working my way through all of Pratchett's work and so far, stories involving the Witches are at the very top of my list and Granny Weatherwax is my hero! Nigel Planer's voice inside my head adds life and color to the characters and to the story. Frankly, I never got into Pratchett's written words before listening to Planer read them, but now that he is permanently ensconced in there, I hear him even when reading the written words. But, back to Granny, I'd LOVE to start a fan club - even a coven based on headology! - Could be worlds of fun! I'd say if you never read any of Pratchett's work, by all means, run through the list and pick out all those with Granny at the center of the story!

Absolutely Delightful
Revisado: 04-19-12
Very much NOT your "Blue Lagoon" saga. The characters and the "rights of passage" experienced by them are full, deep, rich and sophisticated. These guys rocked my world on the way to work and home daily and I went out to find more Terry Pratchett. I have come to believe his humor comes through better in audio with the right narrator, of course. The lead female character is a fine role model for young kids. I believe this is supposed to be a young adult novel but it has plenty of appeal to a broader audience as well, particularly considering Pratchett's humor - I think it ought to be included on school reading lists as required reading - beats a Clockwork Orange which I still don't think I get!!!

Historia
Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Profound!
Revisado: 04-19-12
The best retelling of the myth of Psyche and Eros I've ever heard! And the perspective! My what depth and insight! I saw a bit of myself in Psyche's elder sister and even recognized some of my own self-deceptions! An intense and introspective listen to this book could do away with shelves full of "self-help" guides and put many a marriage counselor out of business. Put yourself in the shoes of the eldest sister and see if you do not also see yourself in her plight...Be prepared, it could be a bit painful to become so quickly enlightened, shifts in paradigms can hurt a bit.

4- Granddaughters - 1 Big Hit!
Revisado: 04-19-12
Ranging in ages 6 to 12, the heirs to my matriarchy sat the stillest I have ever seen them as we listened round the fireplace to this wonderful Irish lilt telling a different tale than many Faye folk tales. The heroin needed rescuing but wasn't the whimpering victim but more of a strong willed lass, the kind I like to give them to look up too. The baby asked "where are the pictures for this story"? I explained the difference between DVDs and audio and between TV/Movies and books...sad, but true. This the very best edition ever for introducing young children to books who have parents too busy to sit and read to them. In fact, this tale and the way it was told by the narrator is largely responsible for my 7 year-old taking a greater interest in reading in school. As soon as she learned there was a possible way for her to "ham it up" by reading aloud, it suddenly wasn't so bad after all and now she reads to me 2 or 3 times each week! Amazing what a little bit o' the Irish can do! This narrator is so awesome I went looking for other books by him as well! Share and enjoy twice the pleasure!

Historia
The incomparable master of the legal thriller takes us deeper into the labyrinth that is the American justice system, always drawing us in with an irresistible hook, pulling the thread of tension tighter and tighter, and then knocking us out with a conclusion that's never "by the book". Maybe that's why, after more than 20 years of consecutive number-one New York Times best sellers, a new novel by America's favorite storyteller is still a major publishing event.

Likable Lawyers?
Revisado: 04-19-12
Even the most unlovable of them have their humanity and kinship to us all and none more than the three most unlikely partners (four counting the secretary) one is ever likely to encounter since the hey day of Dewey, Cheatum & Howe (Three Stooges, if you're wondering). Attorneys are not well loved anyway but these guys really take the cake... but they grow on you. It's funny, and very human and sometimes the good guys come out on top. Law and Order it ain't, but boy what fun this was. I could hardly wait till the end and LOVED the old one-two knock out score against big corporate bad-guys!!! Like the three-stooges approach to legal services, you remember, Able, Unable and Pitiful and we got 2 outta three!!! LOVED this and may actually make me a Grisham fan!

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

Yureka!
Revisado: 04-19-12
With the exception of the 2001: Space Odyssey - the movie - I missed out on Clarke as a kid and wish I had not! I'm catching up now and realize that pretty much every sci-fi written since is reaching for that same vision. I sensed the presence of "HAL" while listening to RAMA and hit the net to find, yes, Clarke was behind the movie...The narration is not the most exciting but the voice is nice and appropriate for the material which makes it worth the listen.

Enigmatic
Revisado: 04-19-12
Yep - if enigmatic means boring, then that's the right word for this one - I was lost. Either this is really boring or it's completely over my head. I found myself yawning and my mind wandering - could not focus on this to save my life! I am a devout listener and have never failed to finish a book but could not force myself to pay attention to Viriconium long enough to tell what was going on. I even had my boyfriend give it a try to see if I was just missing something. He got lost within the first few paragraphs. I kept beating my head against the wall because Neil Gaiman recommended it! I have no idea what the author was even reaching for here and kept having to go back to read the publisher's description to figure out what I was supposed to be listening to! I wanted my credit back on this one.

Historia
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries....

About Time!
Revisado: 04-19-12
It's about time! I've been floundering around looking for urban fantasies hitting and mostly missing for so long this was refreshing. Not since I read the Walker Papers in paperback have I found a more lovable bunch of characters. I really hoped for an Irish accented narrator, but Luke Daniels did a fine job and the accent would have been off for the setting anyway. I've looked every week since finishing the last book hoping for number 4!!! The author's depth and breadth of knowledge about ancient myths and various pantheons spans almost all cultural boundaries! And it's about time everyone realized what an A-hole Thor really is and how much fun it can be just hanging with Jesus!!! Oh, and don't think that "blood-sucking attorney's" are anything new but in this case it's actually literal! If you like myths and gods and demigods and demons in a modern-day setting this ranks right up there with the best in my book! Teeny Twinkly Twilighters and Debutante vampire slayers are not a part of this fiction, it's a little more grown up than that - so give it a whirl.

Bummer!
Revisado: 04-19-12
I thought I was onto something with my initial listen to the excerpt - very disappointed in the shallowness of both main characters and the story line really petered out toward the end - no threads were dangling throughout the material that would have lead the leading lady to her conclusions - she was too busy shagging the leading guy. No worries there - great sex scenes are awesome but the repetitiousness of these and frequency began to drag down my libido rather than spicing it up! Overall a bit of a drag which is too bad cause the actual concept could have gone places and left me panting for the next in the series.

Mark Twain has been making us laugh for generations and, with "Buckshot Cheney's Last Train Ride" and the preposterous income tax insights of "A Mysterious Visit," American Listener's Theatre presents us with the greatest known antidote to the waves of fear that grip the nation: some belly shaking laughter at the expense of our tormentors.

What a Hoot!
Revisado: 04-19-12
Loved the tale and the twisty ending... My granddaughters enjoyed this one too, but not nearly as much as the Green Man - a little too Twainy for the under 12 years demographic. I found myself having to explain a lot of the dialogue but found it delightful for sharing across generations.
