This book has some interesting thoughts about the oligarchies running our world and it is literally laugh out loud funny. An extra bonus if you like cats. Wil Wheaton’s narration is charming and spot on as always. Buy it- you won’t regret it!

Historia
When retired FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does. That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Leaving Quantico for snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town—and there's no sign of Henderson. Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbors report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising—cutting off the town, with no way in or out . . .

My least favorite in the series. Poor narration
Revisado: 07-31-23
I’m a big fan of all the audiobooks in this series. Particularly the narration by Kobe’s Holbrook-Smith. He’s always done a fantastic job with all the voices, including the occasional American. I’ve really enjoyed every book and short story in the series, so it pains me to give this one a less than four star review. But the narrator is just not up to the high standards I’ve always enjoyed in this series. It is PAINFULLY obvious, to this listener anyway, that she is a British reader trying for an American accent. Her vocal tone may not always be as twangy and jarring as it is here. But she makes a mistake that I often hear non- American speakers make when trying to sound “USA-like”: she reads in a weird sort of fake southern dialect that also sounds like it spent time in an Oklahoma trailer park and can’t figure out how to sound things out. Her reading also somehow incorporates a nasal British tone- making the entire narration not sound like any actual accent I’ve ever heard in the US or the UK. It’s unpleasant to listen to and just sounds wrong. There are also little details that I’m surprised the editor didn’t catch. For example, no American person has ever looked outside their work window at the “car park” instead of the parking lot. Not a big thing, but as someone who lives in the US but has friends and family in the UK, it really took me out of the story. It’s too bad, but normally I listen to a new book in this series in a just day or two and I can’t get into this one because of the narration. I’d love to hear her narrate a book with her original accent. I’m sure her voice is much more palatable then. 🙁

A great series. Unique and complex
Revisado: 06-25-23
I enjoyed the author’s fantasy books but I think her writing is even more interesting when she is writing about magic within the interstices of our own world. Alex is a character you grow fonder of as more of her is revealed. By the time Hell Bent the second book in the series came out, I was invested not just in her, but in all of the characters. Finding out what happened to Darlington, seeing Dawes and Mercy grow in confidence and even learning more about Turner, the character I was least interested in at first, all came together as they join forces again to solve intricate puzzles with in the gilded, privileged world of Yale. Both narrators do an excellent job and I was completely interested from start to finish and can’t wait for the next book. For people who said it was boring or poorly written- not every book appeals to every reader. It’s too bad some people are so immature they don’t realize that and can’t just say it wasn’t their cup of tea. I feel that some negative reviews here seem weirdly personal against the author. I don’t know anything about her personal life or politics but a lot of the negative stuff reads like people targeting her with bad reviews for entirely different reasons. I really liked both books in the series and eagerly look forward to the next one.

Historia
Adam Binder has lost what matters most to him. Having finally learned the true identity of the warlock preying on his family, what was supposed to be a final confrontation with the fiend instead became a trap that sent Adam’s beloved Vicente into the realm of the dead, where none living are meant to be. Bound by debt, oath, and love, Adam blazes his own trail into the underworld to get Vicente back, and to end the threat of the warlock once and for all. But the road to hell is paved with far more than good intentions.

Another very entertaining entry to this series
Revisado: 11-28-22
Deadbeat Druid picks up right where the previous book left off and continues the story of Adam Binder, his messed up family, boyfriend Vic and relationship with the supernatural. Once again the author manages to take some familiar “Faery land” ideas and make them into something uniquely his own, blending mythos seamlessly with American “trailer trash” culture, messed up and confused family history and festering fueds and some truly creepy Underworld scenarios. Adam, our main character continues to be a guy you really want to succeed, but this book goes a step further. We get to know Vic a lot better as well, and see he and Adam’s devotion to one another and commitment to doing what’s right be challenged and tested. But Slayton refuses to leave any of his characters behind in the land of easy cliches- even the rest of the effed-up Binder clan have their chances to face up to the poor choices they’ve made and to be and do better- or not. The easy storytelling and compelling trips to the underworld made me care more for these other characters than I thought I did, and made me applaud Adam and Vic for not just leaving them to hang. The straightforward way that Adam and Vic’s queer relationship is approached in the story is also a breath of fresh air- these guys have challenges to face, sure, and personal demons to fight and family to figure out, and problems like anyone else, but their love for and attraction to each other are NEVER questioned by either of them. They are fully realized gay men who are not defined only by their gayness, but who are happy and understand it as an integral part of themselves. They make sure their families and others are clear on it too, and it’s just refreshingly non-torturous and ordinary. The narration is excellent- clear and with great voices for every character, and I listened to this book just as quickly as the previous ones. Whether you’re new to Adam Binder’s world or returning to see what happens, Deadbeat Druid is another fun, sometimes creepy, sometimes funny ride in the old Cutlass.

Adam Binder has the Sight. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. Years after his brother Bobby had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobby’s wife.

A fun surprise- left me wanting more
Revisado: 08-01-22
I got this as a free Audible title on a whim and it was a fun surprise! A deftly built urban magical realism world with fae/elvin realms, tarot cards, cryptids and warlocks that is entertaining and doesn’t take itself too seriously even when stakes are high. But I really liked the main character the most. Adam Binder is one of the most realistic and straightforward gay fantasy heroes I’ve read and his concerns and cares and problems with his family and finding his place in both the real and magical worlds rings very true. The author also has a real sense of his geography and how you’re shaped by where you come from, even if you try and run away from it. I initially chose this book for the narrator, Michael David Axetell, who also narrated Leah Bardugo’s amazing Ninth House, and he does a great job here too. His accents are spot on and he conveys a lot of emotion and attitude with each character and voice. It’s a quick listen and I enjoyed it so much that I’m listening to book two now and enjoying it just as much. I recommend it!

Historia
More than a year after she helped save the world from the Sparnaxian invasion, Andrea Vernon is in a good place. Her boss is giving her greater responsibility and she’s getting to travel a lot (although her fill-in is hopeless at making coffee); things could be getting even more serious with her 8’ 4” superhero boyfriend, The Big Axe; and she has a really fun new BFF, Never More. Small issue, though, with that last item - Never More is a supervillain bent on world domination, and it looks as if nothing can stop her.

Funny and charming. Great narration
Revisado: 11-22-20
Andrea Vernon’s adventures with professional superhero’s and villains are hilarious. I actually laughed out loud. From the Army of Jerks to Well, Actually, the mansplaining hero, the names and goofy sipes are funny but there’s also a lot of heart in this book. Perfect light listen. And Bonnie Turpins voices and narration are perfect.

Too much whining!
Revisado: 07-26-19
I really thought I would love this book. But although the writing isn’t bad, there were three things that just made me not even want to finish.1) the mystery wasn’t all that mysterious. I felt that the author telegraphed clues way ahead of time so instead of feeling suspense or surprise I was left with a dull “yep, that’s what I thought” at points that should have been major reveals. 2) The main character is supposed to be sort of traumatized, I guess. But a lot of her internal dialogue just comes off as bitchy and whiney. To the point where I actually groaned out loud and said “ Just get on with the plot and QUIT WHINING” to my phone. I didn’t feel much sympathy, although I felt like I was supposed to. I just felt annoyed. 3) I think the narrator was trying to get into the mood of the main character, but her voice was so diffident and atonal that it just came across as completely bland to me. And I seemed to hear that tone in everything- even descriptions and dialog from characters with more vitality than the main character.
I know it probably doesn’t sound like it, but I really wanted to enjoy this audiobook! I am really disappointed. I’m going to get a hard copy from the library and see if I can absorb it more enjoyably that way :(
