Historia
In Second Class, working-class Americans of all races, political orientations, and occupations share their stories—cleaning ladies, health care aides, cops, truck drivers, fast food workers, electricians, and more. In their own words, these working-class Americans explain the struggles and triumphs of their increasingly precarious lives—as well as what policies they think would improve them.

We've got much more in common than we think!
Revisado: 11-13-24
This book is a fascinating story of how the other side of America lives. in it, the reader, or listener, gets to know several different people from around the country. It may surprise you to learn just how much that you have in common with them.
These folks do not look or act like what one would think that they would. Yet, what was so surprising is that they want the same things that I do, and they see right through the smoke screens of politicians.
Most of us want the same thing. a nice home to live in, a decent job, the ability to take a vacation every once in awhile, good healthcare, and sometime in the future, retirement. This is the story of people who do not have those things.
Their views on healthcare and housing make an incredible amount of sense.
I have come to understand a little bit better about how the country can be both pro gay, and at the same time anti-transgender, when it comes to children. I've also come to understand how most Americans can be against having an abortion, yet want abortion to be safe and legal. It just goes to show you that the things that bind us don't belong to any single political party.
I think the most telling line in the book is at the end. "There are two political parties in this country. One for the chamber of commerce and the corporations. The other is for the educated credentialed elite and the dependent poor. "

Historia
On a small two-lane bridge in a rural county that loathes the federal government, the US Army uses lethal force to end a standoff with hard-right anti-government patriots. Inside an ordinary diner, a disaffected young man with a handgun takes aim at the American president stepping in for an impromptu photo-op, and a bullet splits the hyper-partisan country into violently opposed mourners and revelers.

Revisado: 09-12-24
I had high hopes for this book, but I'm extremely disappointed. The author gives us five dispatches from a future that he imagines. all of these are dark and dismal. there's not an ounce of optimism in any of the dispatches. Once once we wait through the dispatches, we find that the problem all along is and has been, wait for it,...The Constitution!
The author has decided that not only is the world going to hell in a handbasket, but the solution for the problem is to destroy not only The Constitution, but The United States itself! I could say more, but I would simply be repeating myself. Do not waste your time or your money on this.
The performance itself was quite good. the reader was clear and consistent throughout.

Interesting WW2 Novel
Revisado: 02-22-24
I really cared about the main character, Allen Dudley, and his story of fighting WW2. The author did a fine job of telling the story, and adding enough detail to be accurate, without getting bogged down in minutiea.

Another great book in a great series!
Revisado: 12-28-23
I'm not sure how the author does it. but, somehow, Craig Allison just continues to excel. One would think that the material we get old, would get dry, that it would be somehow less interesting after going through eight books in this series. One would be wrong. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. The stories remain fresh and exciting the characters remain interesting the triumphs are triumphant and the lows are sad.
This series is the most fun I have ever had listing to an audiobook.

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

Turn your view of history upside down
Revisado: 01-13-23
To say that the ideas expressed in Thomas, Sowell's, "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" presents history from a completely different perspective, is simply an understatement. Prepare to have your beliefs challenged, and to be presented with evidence for those challenges! The vast majority of this story flies in the face of what is accepted as conventional wisdom when talking about race in America. it is a dangerous book, because it removes the crutch upon which so many people, who believe that blacks are inferior to whites, support their beliefs. also, it removes the crutch that so many people, who believe that it is the responsibility of our society to somehow, go back hundreds of years in history, and write the wrongs, used to support their own agenda. Whether you agree with the conclusions or not, you will have your beliefs challenged by this book.

Historia
Following a remarkable epoch of greater dispersion of wealth and opportunity, we are inexorably returning towards a more feudal era marked by greater concentration of wealth and property, reduced upward mobility, demographic stagnation, and increased dogmatism. If the last 70 years saw a massive expansion of the middle class, not only in America but in much of the developed world, today that class is declining and a new, more hierarchical society is emerging. The new class structure resembles that of Medieval times.

Are we Doomed to Repeat Feudalism?
Revisado: 01-04-23
I thoroughly enjoy books like this, books that take an idea, and make a proposal that is believable.
Are we doomed to repeat feudalism? that is the question that the author is asking. Unfortunately, The answer may be yes!
Joel Kotkin takes us through his premise, that we are on the road to repeating feudalism, because we are coming under the control of oligarchs. I for one have come away with the impression that owning property, and not carrying any debt, are absolutely imperative to survival in the future. The future that is outlined is one of massive wealth and power controlled by a tiny fraction of the population, while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. in many cases, we may not be able to.
If you enjoy having your beliefs challenged with a strongly supported argument, you will greatly enjoy this book.
the performance by Traber Burns, was quite good. his voice and matter of speaking seemed to be an excellent fit for the material.

The Deliverance represents a fresh start and a chance to leave the war behind for good. Except the war won't be as easy to escape as he thought.

Every once in awhile, you read, or listen to, a story that just doesn't work for you. it's a good "Aliens" story, I suppose, lots of the story reminded me of "Aliens."
The performance was good. I simply could not get interested in any of the characters.
There's lots of action, and good battle scenes,
I think the author could have gotten where her wanted to go with this story in about half the words.

this is a military sci-fi classic
Revisado: 12-07-22
This is a long story. Make no mistake about it, when you read, or listen, to Armor, you are in for the long haul. The story is interesting throughout, confusing in some places. I remember reading this book soon after it was first published of all the books that I've read over the years, I always remembered this one in parts and in pieces. as I listen to the story, apart we come back to me. I found it very entertaining.
This is one of the first examples of interstellar warfare against unknowable aliens. There's no communicating with them, there's no getting along with them. It's just a fight to the death.
I called the universe where the story happens. a functional dystopia. The government is huge and not to be trusted. This was and is a common view of government.
The heroes in the story, are for the most part flawed, which makes them all the more realistic, and for me anyway, much easier to relate to.
This is the story about warfare. It's up close, personal, and above all dangerous. I could relate to the soldiers, and feel some of the misery that they were going through.
This is an excellent story, and highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story and the performance. I liked the Irish and Australian accents, and they contributed to the story.
it's good military sci-fi, not hard sci-fi, it's not about what physics may or may not work.
the funeral scene is particularly poignant and moving.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

One of the best military sci-fi stories ever!
Revisado: 11-18-22
Every once in a while, you read something that you really just love and really just enjoy. This for me, is one of those stories. The concept, of advanced aliens having a combative first contact with Earth, is certainly nothing new. however, it is handled masterfully by Craig Alanson. His handling of groups of different people coming together for a common purpose, and weaving that into a compelling story is amazingly good.
it's a great story, and the exchanges between Colonel. Joe, and Skippy, are absolutely hilarious. I got so many strange looks from people when I would burst out laughing while listening, apparently for no reason!
the story flows well, and I never felt like it was dragging. I think that is because during the natural ebb and flow of the story, the slow parts is where Colonel. Joe and Skippy would have the best conversations. the personalities I encountered reminded me of my time of the service, too.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the narration by RC Bray. his inflection and voices were quite good, I think the story was that much better because of his telling of it.
