Historia
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

Missed Opportunity
Revisado: 05-01-25
Simon Vance was excellent as always as I have listened to him many times. The book was extremely average and one dimensional. It kept reminding me of old TV like “Murder She Wrote”. The various surprised twists were very predictable. A harmless read especially if you just want something easy and there is nothing wrong with that. I see he has sold a lot of books, so people do like it. I’m just glad the book was “included” and I didn’t have to spend a credit on it. Good luck.

Historia
George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war against the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead.

Solid and Traditional
Revisado: 10-04-24
Good solid story and performance with a lot of 1980’s context and references to technology.

Tough, cynical PI Sam Spade is hired by the story's irresistible femme fatale, Brigid O'Shaughnessy, to locate the client's sister by tailing her companion. Spade's partner, Miles Archer, takes on the assignment, and quickly both he and the man he was shadowing are murdered. A 1930’s Standard
Revisado: 08-17-24
Glad I listened but not that good. Probably very standard for that era of the “Second Tier Classics”. I’ll watch the 1941 movie and hope it is better. Weak ending was a missed opportunity. At least I now know it is what it is and won’t do any more of the series. There are worse books.

I guess everyone deserves a mulligan
Revisado: 07-23-24
After many attempts to find a story here, I finally had to stop. It is the longest introduction to potential action I’ve ever read only to find there is no action. I’ve listened and enjoyed many JL books and the journey is worth the wait, but this was maddening. I tried to send the title back couldn’t for some reason. I guess everyone deserves a mulligan. Just not sure what happened here. I couldn’t waste any more of my time. A shame!

Good but could have been better
Revisado: 01-24-22
A solid enough historical fiction novel with a unique approach to providing insight into Nazis occupied Paris and the impact on innocent lives all wrapped up in a suspenseful thriller. I selected it for one of my favorite narrators, Nicholas Guy Smith, who was excellent. However, while the “ending” was satisfying, the epilogue was disappointing. It was a missed opportunity as it could have gone in so many different/better and more substantial directions. Still a worthy listen……
