Help is here!
Revisado: 12-21-24
I’m familiar with EMDR—having had a couple of sessions with two therapists. But I didn’t really understand the “why” and “how” of what was going on. I certainly didn’t think about carrying on the process by myself! Dr. Deborah Cox’s book explains how the process works and how I can “try this at home”—all clearly articulated, but without too many theoretical details. Anyone can do the suggested exercises — without fancy equipment or unnecessary expense. Thankful to have access to this self-help guide!!

Historia
In Five Days Gone, Laura Cumming brilliantly unspools the tale of her mother’s life and unravels the multiple mysteries at its core. Using photographs from the time, historical documents, and works of art, Cumming investigates this case of stolen identity with the tool set of a detective and the unique intimacy of a daughter trying to understand her family’s past and its legacies. Compulsive, vivid, and profoundly touching, Five Days Gone is a masterful blend of memoir and history, an extraordinary personal narrative unlike any other.

Art as a Key to Lost Lives
Revisado: 10-20-19
Laura Cummings brilliantly leans in to exploring her mother's past. Her tale is a new spin on memoir--neither a straight mystery, as the title might suggest, nor merely an account of an adopted child trying to reunite with long-lost parents--Cummings sifts through old photos and her mother's writing to consider what her early childhood and later life must've been. The author's grandmother unwillingly gave up a child for adoption in Scotland and later left for Australia, but Cummings' revelations of the relationships she uncovered are a poignant and imaginative exploration of two generations' past. She reveals how artistic eyes both conserve and open up tales of lives otherwise lost through photos, letters, diaries and memorabilia.

Makes you think about WWII and racism in a new way
Revisado: 07-13-19
My favorite part of this Audible book is Kyle Riley's narration. Second in line is Edugyan's story. Her historical research and ability to spin a story is amazing. I imagined blues musicians in Berlin and Paris in a way I never have before, and the 1990s reflection on the WWII years together brings in issues of nostalgia and remorse in a poignantly beautiful way.

Historia
Eleven-year-old George Washington Black—or Wash—a field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is initially terrified when he is chosen as the manservant of his master’s brother. To his surprise, however, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning, and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human.

Amazing, engaging, intriguing!
Revisado: 06-08-19
I was enraptured from the first lines with this historical novel’s twists and turns. The characters’ personalities come to life through descriptions and dialogue. Washington’s point of view adds to our understanding of his pain, suffering, brilliance and his depth of tenderness toward others. Edugyan has created a masterpiece.
