Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

It's all that and a bag of chips
Revisado: 08-06-18
This book is deserving of all of the awards it has garnered. It is a timely exploration of the every day life of people living in neighborhoods where the entitled never roam. The main character lives in both the "white" world and the "black" world, giving us a unique look at not only the differences but the similarities between the two. This is done in the context of an engrossing story that never gets too preachy. Bahni's Turpin's work with the characters and emotions of this piece is a brilliant accompaniment to Ms. Thomas's well written prose. This book should be required reading across North American schools with a view to increasing understanding and awareness across society.

Historia
Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Johnny Heller knocks another one out of the park!
Revisado: 04-16-16
Would you listen to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn again? Why?
Yes, I probably will someday, simply because it is a classic and Johnny did such an amazing job with it.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the language and the style. It's all so simple and lazy and down home. You have to get over the use of the "N" word and the treatment of blacks though. It is a relic of the time in which it is written and historically accurate but is still difficult to take.
Have you listened to any of Johnny Heller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Absolutely. I am a huge Johnny Heller fan. He has been brilliant in every thing that I have ever listened to him in and this title is no exception.
Any additional comments?
Don't buy any other version of this audiobook. Johnny's performance is simply the best.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Expected So Much More
Revisado: 04-16-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If they were interested in reading the book then I would simply because there aren't any other choices of narrator.
What aspect of Donald Sutherland’s performance would you have changed?
I expected so much more from Donald Sutherland, especially given all of the "5" ratings that he has been given for this book. I am convinced this rating must be a knee jerk reaction based on his name. I believe it COULD have been great as his voice is perfect for this title. I was excited that he was the one reading it - until I listened. He did not apply his vast talent to this narration, IMHO. Had he done so, it would have been a much, much better book.
Any additional comments?
This recording is far below today's standards with page turns and odd breaths/sounds/mouth noises being left in. If you can find another narration read by a decent narrator, chose that one instead.

Novel story and characters
Revisado: 03-13-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the story so it was time well spent. The concept was fresh and new - at least to me.
Would you be willing to try another book from John Farris? Why or why not?
Yes. His writing style is easy to listen to and the plot lines are well fleshed out.
Would you be willing to try another one of Chet Williamson’s performances?
I had some issues with Mr. Williamson's performances. One of the things that bothered me was the presence of gasping breaths. Whether to remove or reduce the breaths is a subject of much debate and I may be overly sensitive but I don't want to hear any loud breaths unless the story demands it, for example if someone is running. Learning better breathing skills or editing down the breaths would make for a much nicer listen. In addition, I would have liked to have heard more emotion in the narrator's voice. More stress, more terror, more joy, etc.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably. There was a lot of suspense in the book which would make for exciting viewing and the special effects required would be interesting to see.

Historia
Social media is but one of five converging forces that promise to change virtually every aspect of our lives. You know these other forces already: mobile, data, sensors and location-based technology. Combined with social media they form a new generation of personalized technology that knows us better than our closest friends. Armed with that knowledge our personal devices can anticipate what we'll need next and serve us better than a butler or an executive assistant. The resulting convergent superforce is so powerful that it is ushering in an era the authors call the Age of Context.

Not a cookie cutter
Revisado: 02-08-14
If you could sum up Hush in three words, what would they be?
interesting, suspenseful, fresh
What other book might you compare Hush to and why?
Hush is a crime drama much like many others but the storyline is quite fresh and UNLIKE any other I've personally read.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I found Ms. Beresford's narration to be stiff and slow in the beginning but she seemed to warm up to the story so that by about the middle of the book, I was able to lose myself in the book and forget about the narration.
Any additional comments?
If you enjoy stories involving psychopathic killers, this will be an enjoyable read for you.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Amazing
Revisado: 01-11-14
What made the experience of listening to Invisible Man the most enjoyable?
Joe Morton gives a brilliant performance. One of the best narrations I have ever had the pleasure to experience and I have listened to a lot of audiobooks.
What other book might you compare Invisible Man to and why?
Perhaps some elements of The Warmth of Other Suns insofar as the descriptions of life in the south and Harlem in the early to mid 20th century.
What does Joe Morton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
From a technical point of view, I was completely taken with Joe's work. He put so much life into his characters that I am driven to compare the text to the narration to see if what he does with the work was written into the text or just the magic that he brought to this book.
Any additional comments?
The story is very engaging. I can't recommend this audiobook enough.
