Historia
Moby Dick, which has been considered the great American novel, was first published in 1851. For material, Melville drew on his experience on whaling ships between 1841 and 1844, the sinking of the whaling vessel Essex in 1820, and extensive perusal of literature on whaling and many other subjects.

Revisado: 07-30-24
Full cast performance but I could only give three stars overall and for the performance because Ahab was so bad. Ahab is supposed to be all terror and grandeur but Ron Altman sounds like Mr Magoo trying to play Shakespeare. A shame, really, because the rest of the readers were perfect, especially Starbuck, Stubb, and Pip. Jeff Moon played Ishmael and he did an outstanding job of changing his voice when he's an omniscient narrator and when he's the character. The best performance was when Queequeeg and Ishmael talk to each other.

False advertising - this is not unabridged as advertised
Revisado: 07-09-24
I got no further than chapter 2 before noticing missing paragraphs. The scene at the entry to the research facility is missing the part where the guards point their guns at the general and Cavell explains why it's standard procedure. Later the dialogue is cut where Cavell explains why the guards don't have a set schedule. There are more examples of missing scenes and dialogue all through the book. The story is there but some of the humor and insight is lost. It's disappointing that Audible advertises the book as unabridged when it's not.

Historia
Aboard the SS Campari, all is not well. For Johnny Carter, the Chief Officer, the voyage has already begun badly; but it’s only when the Campari sails that evening, after a succession of delays that he realises something is seriously wrong. A member of the crew is suddenly missing and the stern-to-stern search only serves to increase tension. Then violence erupts and suddenly the whole ship is in danger. Is the Campari a victim of modern day piracy? And what of the strange cargo hidden below the decks?

This is supposed to be unabridged but it's not
Revisado: 07-06-24
There are bits missing throughout the story. some examples of missing sentences:
Johnny says he saw the cables the captain sent and they were really something. Johnny says the misery quotient of millionaires increases with their bank account. He also mentions that he left MacDonald guarding the wrong man.
It's still a great story and my favorite, but it's too bad that it doesn't have all the original text.

This is not a complete collection of Poe's stories
Revisado: 11-13-23
There are only 28 of Poe's stories in this collection, ending with The Raven which is not a story. The stories that are included are good and the performance is very very good. However, I bought this book on the title alone, because I wanted all of Poe's stories in one volume and because of the false advertising, I did not get what I paid for.

Spoiled by constant chapter announcements
Revisado: 10-30-23
Jane Austen's books are quite wonderful but it's very disagreeable to have each chapter announced. It breaks the flow of the story and adds nothing, as the chapters are simply numbered and do not have any quotes or other introductions.

Historia
Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. Adapted in English and for the stage by David Serero. This adaptation is the most faithful to the original French text and reduced to an hour and 30 minutes and for 10 actors. This is the full script from David Serero's off-Broadway production and adaptation of 2018, in which he starred as Cyrano with critical acclaim.

Passable
Revisado: 04-14-23
David Serero did a good job. Not as good as Jose Ferrer, but that is a very high bar. If you liked Gerard Depardieu, you'll like David. Unfortunately, the girl (I cannot say actress) who read (I cannot say portrayed) Roxanne was quite dreadful and ruined the production. There was no emotion whatsoever in her voice. She simply spoke the lines. Cyrano should have sent her to join Montfluery.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

I wish Miss Newton would read other books, like Rebecca and Jamaica Inn and Anne of Green Gables. I've been reading Jane Eyre since I was a little girl and the story never seemed so wonderful as it did in Miss Newton's voice.

Dominic Hoffman is the WORST. I deleted this book and got a different version to listen to. You'd think that a guy reading a book about traveling through Hell would have some feeling, but no. I will avoid Hoffman like the lowest circle of the inferno.

SPOILER Scary Ending
Revisado: 05-07-22
Assimov was a humanist with a pathetic belief that people can be good in and of themselves. I have read that he was also a godless heathen so it's not surprising that I, Robot drips with scorn for the faithful and mocks Islam and uses religious concepts disparagingly. Nor is it surprising that the book ends with the robots taking over the world while humanity fades into the background. Still, it's an interesting book with engaging characters, and it's thought-provoking enough to reward re-reading.
