Nothing like the Film, Very Disappointing
Revisado: 01-11-25
Unfortunately if your here looking for another taste after enjoying the incredible Satoshi Kon film, I have to warn you that the original Novel bears no resemblance to the Movie( or should that be the movie bears no resemblance of the novel?).
What's here isn't "bad" but I really can't convince myself to say it's good either. The Characters are all present from the film you may be familiar with but this is much more of a very shallow slasher film styled story than a deep psychological thriller like the movie. I'd say this is much more shocking and gruesome, dealing with what's basically "Buffalo Bill vs Mima The Pop Idol", but frankly what was shown in the film is so much more impactful because of the restraint shown. We could infer so much about the Stalker in the film, where here he is straight up Molesting Children and wiping his Semen onto TVs as he watches Mima..
I just cannot recommend this in good faith if you're coming here from watching the film and trust me that is the LAST thing I want to say about a book I was very excited to finally read.

Historia
In this gloriously over-the-top tale, Aoyama, a widower who has lived alone with his son ever since his wife died seven years before, finally decides it is time to remarry. Since Aoyama is a bit rusty when it comes to dating, a filmmaker friend proposes that, in order to attract the perfect wife, they do a casting call for a movie they don't intend to produce. As the resumes pile up, only one of the applicants catches Aoyama's attention - Yamasaki Asami - a striking young former ballerina with a mysterious past. But she is a far cry from the innocent young woman he imagines her to be.

Excellent Film, Lacking Novel
Revisado: 12-07-22
I was really intrigued when I'd heard Takashi Miike's AUDTITION was based on a novel, but having finally had the chance to read it I'm left a little perplexed. The film seemed to go well out of it's was to expand on what was in the novel regarding the characters histories and trauma where here it's left mostly up to passing conversation. I suppose in a sense it's more Horrible because of just how little time is spent pondering if something is wrong or not that makes the finale so shocking and disturbing but I just can't help but feel like the book fumbles this where the film seems to soar.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

An Intriguing Start with an Incredibly Silly End
Revisado: 09-30-22
I really wanted to come away from this book feeling scared and satisfied, but it just doesn't make the cut and falls so very very flat on its face.
At first, if your a fan of Horror Literature or Media at all you'll immediately notice incredibly close similarities to Amityville and Hill House among others. Family moves into an incredible old home with an Incredibly low pricetag attached to it, but all is not as it seems and the home has a long history of tradgedy associated with it. Small child besieged by night terrors, near death experiences and mood swings. The house increasingly seeming to have someone else living in its walls aside from our protagonists.
But it frequently pulls back the curtain with small revelations taking Maggie back and forth between confirming her belief the Haunting she experienced as a child was a fabrication by her family for publicity and to get out of a home that is literally falling apart, to new discoveries that cannot simply be dismissed which unerlarth grim new possibilities. You start to believe this book is fairly clever in it's constant subverting of expectations no matter what side of the fence you're on in the Skeptic/Believer arguement.
Then the ending comes around and turns into a very silly Whodunnit, secret passages and doors NOBODY whose owned the home have seemingly ever seen, Doomsaying old hags and incredibly obvious Dessert to die for.
The worst thing you can feel after a long book is feeling like your time and money have been wasted, and sadly this seems to be the case for me here.

Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Interesting Premise, Flawed Execution.
Revisado: 09-01-20
I'm torn, I really enjoy WWZ and the Zombie Survival Guide. But ultimately this book just doesn't meet either of those books highs while matching both of their lows. The groups is full of pretty obnoxious stereotypes and they are very, very boring characters. Things start picking up when Sasquatch begins getting spotted and the group starts speculating and observing them, giving names to a pretty large group of the creatures. But nothing here acts human, not even the people. They are Satires of modern, well-off people but just total airheads.
A neighborhood built in the woods to get away from society WITH NO MEANS OF CONTACTING ANYONE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY other than using WiFi? No flareguns, no satellite phones or anything??? And it's just written off as"well you don't so why would they?" Uhhh because they are isolated in the Pacific Northwest and that's just standard for a lot of f communities in those areas? The book wanted them to still have some modern conveniences of Smart Homes, but somehow our Elon-Musk-alike designed these super homes with no real backup or emergency plans and only takes away the groups internet and ability to buy groceries and have them delivered via drone like Amazon's abandoned service. This is simply too dumb to believe.

DisneyWar is an enthralling tale of one of America's most powerful media and entertainment companies, the people who control it, and those trying to overthrow them. It tells a story that - in its sudden twists, vivid, larger-than-life characters, and thrilling climax - might itself have been the subject of a Disney classic - except that it's all true.

Interesting Read but Easy to get Lost
Revisado: 07-24-20
Fascinating look into the corperate rise of Disney, but it can be difficult to keep track of what's happening when. It seemed rare to hear a specific Date or even Year and your gauge for when something is taking place is either the mention of an anual meeting, someone being fired or what movie came out around that point of time in the book, but sometimes the story backtracks as well which can muddy things further.
