Still Creepy after all these Years!
Revisado: 02-21-14
What made the experience of listening to War of the Worlds (Dramatized) the most enjoyable?
Since this is a radio broadcast it is meant to be listened to. Even though the sound effects are cheesy at best, and the recording is old, it still manages to creep you out. I can understand how there were reports of people panicking when they came into it without hearing the intro.
What did you like best about this story?
Orson Welles had an extremely distinctive voice, it was made for this venue. The story keeps very close to the original story. BTW, don't rely on the movie version of this story for the truth. Buy the HG Wells original story (Its free on Kindle). The story takes place at the turn of the 19th and 20th century in England but it is really good.
Which character – as performed by Orson Welles – was your favorite?
Professor Pierson who narrarates the story is compelling and the varying emotions in his voice, from skeptisim (sp) to outright horror, makes it more realistic.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither, it scared the hell out of me. I have a 90 minute commute to work and I listened to it at night during a rather bad storm. Add to the fact that hwy 67 has no streetlights and well, you get the picture.
Any additional comments?
My only complaint is that its a bad copy with a part of part 2 coming in during part 1 with a rather annoying screech to it. You need to get a better copy.

The book is better than the movie
Revisado: 10-04-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Echoes from the Macabre to be better than the print version?
I bought this mainly for one story, The Birds. I had the audio version of this on cassette and it had eventually fallen apart. This was the version I had and this reader is amazing. So this review will be mainly on the one story, although all the stories are good, this is my favorite.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Echoes from the Macabre?
Nat's discovery of the death of his neighbors and employers the Triggs. Very creepy and quite unforgetable.
Have you listened to any of Valentine Dyall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
See above.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
IT SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!! The first time I listened to this, I was driving to Chicago alone, late at night. In the dark. No lights. Again, ALONE!!! Need I say more?
Any additional comments?
This is a collection of DuMaurier's lesser known stories. It should be heard or read, these should never be forgotten. It won't be by me, that's for sure.

Evelyn Ryan was an enterprising woman who kept poverty at bay with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the "contest era" of the 1950s and 1960s. From her frenetic supermarket shopping spree - worth $3,000 today - to her clever entries worthy of Erma Bombeck, Dorothy Parker, and Ogden Nash, Evelyn Ryan's story shows how a winning spirit will triumph over the poverty of circumstance.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, have reommended it to many. Its a story of a woman making the best out of a bad situation coming out in the end the winner in more ways than one.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Evelyn of course. A person who had dreams that were never going to come to be, married to a man she really didn't love and forced to marry due to pregnancy, having a multitude of children and being the main breadwinner without having a real job is a person to be celebrated.
What about Terry Ryan’s performance did you like?
Terry lived it, she knew her subject better than a professional reader did and her emotions came through brilliantly. A great writer and storyteller, she will be missed.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A lot of anger, frustration, tears and yes laughter, mostly due to Evelyn's great sense of humor.
Any additional comments?
This isn't a well known book, the movie was less known, but it is worth a read. Give it a chance.

A classic never goes out of style
Revisado: 10-04-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Many young persons have never read Carrie, depending on the movie to tell them the story. Big mistake. This is far better than the film.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Carrie?
The prom of course. Readers get to see it from different points of view and it makes the experience richer and more unforgetable.
Which scene was your favorite?
See above
Did Carrie inspire you to do anything?
Hopefully the reader will look upon bullying in a different light after reading Carrie and the forward by Stephen King. It is not a victimless harmless activity.
Any additional comments?
I have loved this book since I was 14. Except for some references, the story is timeless.. A great start to an amazing career. Bravo Stephen!

Revisado: 10-04-13
Would you listen to Still Foolin' 'Em again? Why?
Absolutely! Wonderful story told in a very entertaining way.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Billy! A consumate storyteller, he draws you in and you feel like you are sitting with him and he is personally telling the story. I could see him in my mind while he was talking.
Have you listened to any of Billy Crystal’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have had the pleasure of seeing him live and own some of his recordings. Just as engrossing as ever!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
His chapter on 9-11 brought me to tears, was so happy that his uncle got out. But his chapter on his daughter's wedding was beautiful and painful, since I have two daughters as well and can relate to his feelings at that time.
Any additional comments?
Some would think a story of a man who had a good childhood, a happy marriage, wonderful kids and a successful career would be boring. Where is the scandal, the addictions, the affairs!? Although his life wasn't perfect, Billy Crystal tells a engrossing, and very funny tale that should be read. Not everyone has to touch bottom before they reach the top and Billy has. Plus, he is still adorable after all these years!

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Revisado: 06-19-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, an engrossing and facinating story, been a fan of this story for a long time.
What did you like best about this story?
Grabs your attention from the beginning and keeps it for the duration of the book
Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never heard him before, did a great job on this one
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Stephen King has a tendancy to be a little uh...detailed in his stories. Hearing them rather than reading them makes me cringe, so I guess I did have an extreme reaction.
Any additional comments?
This is my favorite Stephen King book of all time. I have been waiting for it to be available on audio. Very enjoyable listen and will most likely listen again.

Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the 20th century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

Great book made better by Audible
Revisado: 06-19-12
Would you listen to Helter Skelter again? Why?
Yes, an engrossing and entertaining book is meant to be read again and again and this falls under both categories.
What did you like best about this story?
I read this book for the first time in 1975 when I was 15 years old. I happened to be in LA visiting family when the murders occured so I had more than a bit of interest in the story. Hearing it gave me more detail and the afterword of 25 years later was very interesting.
What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?
He used some inflections and mild accents so you can tell the difference between the characters in conversations. I appreciated that.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Nothing extreme, some chuckles at some of the humerous parts of the story (the story itself isn't humorous but some of the characters were). I recall cringing a bit at some of the details of the murders, I think being older it bothered me more than when I was 15.
Any additional comments?
Since the copywrite was 2010, I had hoped for more information, such as the death of Susan Atkins and other details but I was satisfied with the book and thanks so much to Audible!
