Historia
Twenty years ago Emma Michaels, Mackenzie Hayes, and Serena Stockton bonded over their New York City dreams. Then, each summer, they solidified their friendship by spending one week at the lake together, solving their problems over bottles of wine and gallons of ice cream. They kept the tradition for years, until jealousy, lies, and life's disappointments made them drift apart. It's been five years since Emma has seen her friends, an absence designed to keep them from discovering a long-ago betrayal. Now she's in desperate need of their support.

Good Idea But Labored
Revisado: 02-22-25
This book would have been better if it was two hours shorter. The "big reveal" stretched on way too long till it was hardly a reveal at all. The dialogue was trite in too many places. By the last hour, I didn't care about any of the characters anymore. Overall, very disappointing.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Rich Storytelling
Revisado: 07-08-20
Woven between musings of the biology of life in the swamp, is the story of the indomitable spirit of Katherine Clarke. Part love story, part mystery, part chronicle of the best and worst of human nature.
There are delicious layers of storytelling here that leave you thinking about the characters and their motivations when you're not listening to it and long after you have finished.
This is a great book club selection as there are so many things to consider and discuss.

Historia
Nate Jackson’s Slow Getting Up is an unvarnished and uncensored memoir of everyday life in the most popular sports league in America - and the most damaging to its players - the National Football League. After playing college ball at a tiny Division III school, Jackson, a receiver, signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, before moving to the Denver Broncos. For six seasons in the NFL as a Bronco, he alternated between the practice squad and the active roster, eventually winning a starting spot - a short, tenuous career emblematic of the average pro player.

Shattered Every Stereotype I Held
Revisado: 09-15-19
I was shocked by this book, delighted by its prose, and humbled by its insights.
My only intersection with football is once a year at a Superbowl party where I barely watch the game. When the evening news features sports coverage in a locker room and a player being interviewed, I typically roll my eyes and think "Dear God, why does anyone want to hear them speak?"
Thank you, Nate Jackson for shattering my stereotypes, taking my blinders off and telling the human story behindthe football machine. It is ignorance like mine that permits the NFL to continue throwing athletes into their meat grinder for the public's entertainment.
I loved this book.

Historia
Now a number-one international best seller, Billion Dollar Whale is "an epic tale of white-collar crime on a global scale" (Publishers Weekly), revealing how a young social climber from Malaysia pulled off one of the biggest heists in history. In 2009, a chubby, mild-mannered graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business named Jho Low set in motion a fraud of unprecedented gall and magnitude—one that would come to symbolize the next great threat to the global financial system.

Well researched and well told. I found myself equally astonished and angered by the story. I would have liked to know more about how the people of Malaysia's economic lives were impacted by this theft.

She was a bewitching young girl, that pretty Polly Marsh, and she knew it. She also knew that beauty could be her passport into the castles where she had always known she belonged. So she set her sights on a duke and joined the firm of Westerman’s as a stenographer. Surely one of that noble family would notice her, and then all her dreams would come true! The trouble with pretty Polly Marsh was that she just didn’t know her place.

Historia
The vicious decapitation of Stanley Preston, a wealthy, socially ambitious plantation owner, at Bloody Bridge draws Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, into a macabre and increasingly perilous investigation. The discovery near the body of an aged lead coffin strap bearing the inscription King Charles, 1648 suggests a link between this killing and the beheading of the deposed seventeenth-century Stuart monarch.
