Even gods need therapy.
Revisado: 07-07-24
Narration is decent, distinct voices that stay consistent through the book.
Story ties up neatly, strays into therapy sessions a bit much for me. Level of snark about the same as last book.
One decision at the end is not fully explained why it has to be done the way it is and that frustrates me

Historia
The long-awaited sequel to Jake’s Magical Market is finally here—and now with more market! Well, not quite yet. First, Jake has to survive a perilous trek through time if he ever hopes to return home to his friends, his market, and his former world. The last time we saw our intrepid hero, Jake had barely managed to escape being trapped on a dead version of his own world. Using a combination of his new powers, he threw himself backward through time, back to when the god that trapped him first rose to power.

Factory Reset MC?
Revisado: 07-01-24
The change in narration, while annoying, is well done. I was able to distinguish between characters throughout the story.
The plot is slow compared to the last book, falling almost into the slice of life category a few times. Alot more comedic moments, some I felt broke away from the world building and atmosphere of the story.
The MC is the biggest shift, he just went through a multitude of hair raising adventures and battles in the first book and yet in this book he acts almost as if the knowledge and skills he had gained never happened.

Victor can’t wait to get the hell out of high school, go to the local community college on a sports scholarship, and start his own life. But that’s all put on hold when he enters his abuela’s house and somehow ends up stepping into a world unlike anything he’s ever known, filled with fantastical meta-humans; walking, talking devils; and other creatures one usually needs some serious pharmaceuticals to see. Fanwath is no dream, though. In fact, it’s a nightmare.

Excellent Narration. Overpowered MC?
Revisado: 06-22-24
Narration was excellent, distinct and consistent voices for each character.
MC is good, feels real, and focuses on his survival in a strange world. There are a few events I believe should have been more of a struggle to overcome or at least have long-term lasting effects that were simply powered through.
Character development seems promising for MC and auxiliaries.
RPG elements are decent, there are few notification pop ups and hardly any identification pop ups which I personally miss but understand can be annoying, status updates are not hard to endure unlike some series in the genre.
Balance seems a little off with power distribution between levels but that may be a quirk answered later.

Sancia, Clef, and Berenice have gone up against long odds in the past. But the war they’re fighting now is one even they can’t win. This time, they’re not facing robber-baron elites or even an immortal hierophant, but an entity whose intelligence is spread over half the globe—one that uses the magic of scriving to control not just objects but human minds. To fight it, they’ve used scriving technology to transform themselves and their allies into an army—a society—unlike anything humanity has seen before.

That Ending Though....
Revisado: 09-17-23
I dislike reviews that give spoilers, and so all I can say is the final chapter/epilogue is the main reason for the lost stars. Overall the story follows the trend of the trilogy and wraps everything up. The narrator was excellent and heard no recording or reading errors. The epilogue made me feel like the author wanted the emotional impact of several different endings in the same story and thus felt it took away from it as a whole. Also there was an odd acceleration of world events that left me a little bewildered.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

DnD style Coffee House Romance
Revisado: 06-21-23
Narrator is good, I try books sometimes just cause he is the narrator.
Confusion - Last 40mins (after end credits) are about events leading up to the prologue, which is where I think it should have been and not sure why it is separated.
This book is not for me, has almost hallmark movie vibes in plot structure and overall character types, just in a DnD scenario. There is enough fantasy to change up a fairly common and straight forward plot. A lesbian romace gives it a sensational flare. There are a couple of times characters do things for plot's sake rather then sensible things given their background.
My rating and long tirade may come off a little harsh, but is due to expecting deeper delve into everything. I did not start this book for a cozy read and I believe that has affected reaction.
WORLD BUILDING- shallow, low on descriptions of everything, just the bare necessities for plot points. Gaslamp tag apparently is for victorian era based fantasy worlds? Didn't really see that except for the technology level.
MAGIC SYSTEM - exists, and has a couple points but does not spend time unless it is needed for the plot.
PLOT- Straight forward, fighting is all but non existent, and everything aligns for the MC, all contentions are dealt with and "twists" are more like rainbow arcs that can be seen for miles. Note: The rainbow is being used as an example of how visible plot twists seem and NOT due to the mild LGBT romance that is in the book though I should mention that...which I just did.
Pet peeve 1 - Characters seemed more like humans with character race abilities. I am all for races going the unexpected path but they are not human, and thus have different point of views than a human in the same situation.
Pet Peeve 2 - low descriptions means even the coffee house inner workings were basic and glossed over. Things that could have been magical were mundane.

There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

Occupied Paris during WW2 In Fantasy World?
Revisado: 06-19-23
I have no idea if that is an accurate description, but it was the most persistent correlation I had in my head throughout the book.
Pros
Good World building focused on a city and its mystic grove of trees A plethora of different characters who were well developed, and some interesting magic mechanics I thought was interesting. I enjoy when multiple magical systems are introduced.
Cons:
the way the view jumped from a large number of characters both major an minor, caused the plots and timelines to be hard to follow sometimes. Found it hard to get attached to any of the characters and, maybe due to the fact there were so many perspectives, I had a hard time finishing the book.

Excellent Worldbuilding.
Revisado: 06-13-23
Based in a Clockwork/Steampunkish alternative World, Brandon Sandwrson has a gift for introducing the world naturally and within the confines of the story. The magic system is based in chalk and is a little odd at first but I appreciate it. The one thing is the way the "non-magicians" in this world deal with the threat seems a little unimaginative seeing the wonders of technology they show throughtlout the story. I would love a sequel to this book and more novels based in this World.

An Okay Narrator, okay worldbuilding, Decent MC
Revisado: 05-07-23
Narrator grating but okay, base building is too unlock, then plug'n'play while missing the MC personally creating items/rooms/minions which hurts immersion for me. MC is intelligent and strong while being a little selfish and amoral.

He was not surprised...
Revisado: 04-04-23
Pros:
Main Character is a good deviation from the normal MCs in this genre. His POV as a monster adds a nice spin to the story. Also he is not as...dumb...as many MCs seem to be in this genre.
Narration is excellent. I do not recall any editing errors and I always knew who was talking.
World Building is good, though limited, the MC stays in a fairly localized area.
Magic System is good pretty common merging of cultivation and point based leveling.
Litrpg Elements for me honestly is the most balanced I have heard so far. Not so much that it is grating but enough that it is informative.
Cons;
Main Character is not surprised, that is used a little too much for me. A curveball needs to throw him off at least once or twice but no, he is not surprised. I like competent MCs but there is a balance between that and the one who makes mistakes and learns from them. Also while his fighting style is pretty good, there is a lack of description that annoys me, last half of the book his armor and weapons simply appear when he needs them which affects my immersion in the scene. I am worried that the fact the MC is becoming more flavor text and less integral to the story as he becomes more like a typical adventurer. Apparently the MC annoyed me enough that he seems to be the only reason for the missing star....
oh wait, world building is a little narrow so that is another reason...but...there is a single item he discovers that I like so much it excuses the limited area...so never mind. Just the MC, at least for me.

An okay story with excellent narration.
Revisado: 12-23-22
I am just going to say that Ray Porter is fast becomimg one of my go to narrators! The story on the other hand, almost felt generic; Earth is being destroyed, humanity in turmoil, alien artifact which the military is threatened by, there just never seemed to be any twists or major "ah ha!" moments. Also I just finished this author's Bobiverse series which has some awesome concepts so I may have been coming at this book with higher expectations.
