Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Bookclub chose a good book
Revisado: 05-04-25
My book club sent me here. Shout out to book + bottle St Pete. I loved this book. It brings up tough topics. They handle them very interestingly. Unfortunately, there’s no conclusion, but that’s Life with the topics they’re bringing up. It was also a fascinating read into the world of publishing when you have a hit on your hands and when you don’t, she gave a constant comparison of the TLC she was getting from the publisher when she had the next big hit. Overall, well written.

Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet (“choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover”) and decrying the worst offenders (“kale is the early morning of foods”).

This book isn’t good
Revisado: 03-22-25
I really enjoyed a lot of Jim’s other stuff especially the stand-up shows. My wife really likes that TV show that only went for one season but we tried to listen to this on the car trip and it just wasn’t that good. I don’t know what the problem was with us or with him, but we didn’t find it funny or interesting.

It kind of fell flat for me.
Revisado: 03-22-25
My book club bought me brought me here. Shout out to book and bottle St Pete. Something about the story just kind of fell flat for me. I wouldn’t say that I liked it. There wasn’t a whole lot going on. It was just kind of real people doing real things and showed you how prim and proper and formal Japan is.

Charlie munger brought me here
Revisado: 01-22-25
Charlie Munger brought me here because the man adores Lee Kuan Yew. I don’t know what I expected but this interview style narrative did nothing for me. I don’t have some Future job in the state department so this wasn’t that helpful. I guess I thought they’d be more of a background on him.

One day, a cataclysmic event occurs: all of the white people in America walk into the nearest body of water. A year later, Charlie Brunton is a Black man living in an entirely new world. Having served time in prison for a wrongful conviction, he’s now a professor of electric and solar power systems at Howard University when he receives a call from someone he wasn’t even sure existed: his daughter Sidney, a nineteen-year-old left behind by her white mother and step-family.

The premise was silly and the author wanted to cover too much ground with too little time.
Revisado: 01-10-25
So my book club brought me here. Shout out to book a bottle, St Pete. Wow this was not a good book. The premise was silly and the author wanted to cover too much ground with too little time. And then it just kinda ends.Just leave you hanging. The protagonist Charlie is accused of rape in what feels like a story from the early 1960s but takes place in *check my notes* the 2000s! If you read the summary of the book and thought to Yourself that you’re not gonna like this book, but maybe there’s something in it for you, I’ll go ahead and let you know :you’re not gonna like this book. There’s nothing redeeming in it.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
Yetu holds the memories for her people - water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners - who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone, save one - the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu. Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface, escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities.

Nice story
Revisado: 05-02-24
My book club sent me here and this isn’t really my genre. shout out book + bottle st Pete! This wasn’t a great story by any stretch, mostly due to the ending. It was interesting though, and it kept my attention. I was not impressed at all with a narrator and I kind of thought it was the worst narrator I’ve ever heard in an audible book. Something about his voice was just annoying.

Historia
It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

Not my kind of book
Revisado: 01-24-24
My book club picked this book and I really think it was awful. I couldn’t find myself identifying with the characters & they didn’t seem to have any redeeming qualities. They were just selfish people in their 20s and that’s it. The book just kind of ends. I guess they thought it was some kind of big explosion, but not really in my opinion it was really kind of a letdown. I thought more stuff was going to happen.
But if you’re into romance books about selfish 20-year-olds from NY this book is for you.
