Just so much thinking about alternatives, possibilities and contingencies I have trouble following the plot. it's not poorly written or edited, others might like it, but it's hard to follow for me.

bizarrely you seem to need to have read other, incompatible books regarding the cultivation of Xi in order to follow this one. It strikes me as a PR AI copy of other goods books.

Superman flattens everybody he doesn't like

I don't think I've ever read a book without a plot before. Mage with superpowers just squishes all the dark mages who make no attempt to counter his powers in any way.

Even negative events provide no tension, protagonist just gets smacked somehow, and recovers over months or years (a chapter).

there's no foreshadowing of anything. No struggle to figure something out. just a series of scenes using superpowers to flatten anybody in the way while coming upon something he wasn't expecting.

travel here? oh the ruler was impersonated by dark mages, flatten them all.

travel there? yeah, there's a dark mage army, wander around killing the dark mages and recruit the rest of the army.

dialog is great. there's just no meat to the story. nothing to expect, and nothing to try to figure out, you just read until the protagonist gets smacked with the knowledge hammer. no real struggles, the protagonist just occasionally gets knocked unconscious in a way nobody knew was possible, and you read him slowly waking up while the dragon explains she didn't know it could happen, but apparently it did.

fantastic multi hour dick joke!

this is fantastic science fiction for anybody who isn't put off by crude humor.

yes, the humor is crude and continues to be just as crude throughout. no, it doesn't get even slightly less crude once the author has set the tone. no, I won't be recommending this to my mother or my wife.

but if you can suspend your disgust and disbelief, the dick and shit jokes are easily varied enough to be entertaining just by themselves. The author has miraculously managed to capture the flavor the Battle Royale streaming culture while keeping the story interesting enough to lead readers from one crude joke to the next. it's not a perfect representation, because it doesn't descend into unapologetic racism (it occasionally surfaces apologetically) or some of the hurtful insults that you sometimes see, but that's yet another plus for me.

I don't have friends who tell crude jokes like those in this book. I don't tell any crude jokes like in this book either. but I laughed out loud repeatedly at literally shit that I can never share with my wife.

well played. I'll buy the next one too as long as my wife never finds out about this one and starts listening to see what kind of shit her husband would give 5 stars.

Best prepper book so far!

I absolutely love this book! the characters have depth, and are, aside from some passing criminals, not so clearly separated into "good guys" and "bad guys" as some other authors. It also really benefits from the 299 days world building without being unnecessarily tied to the previous series. this book easily stands on its own.

the start of the book begins with a really ham-handed forward by Glen Tate that paints the book as something men can use to get their wives interested in prepping. that might sometimes be true, but I honestly enjoyed this prelude and bug out journey more than the first 299 day novel (if only by a bit). it seems FAR more realistic than the rich, but down to earth lawyer who somehow has 30 hours per week to spend working on his cabin, running SWAT drills with his buddies.

This first book doesn't have much action (that I expect to appear in future books), but it easily kept me engaged. I was extremely disappointed when it ended! I'm especially interested in how the protagonist's efforts at animal husbandry goes long term, as that's been lacking in many other prepper novels I've read.

Awkward, but decent B Zombie novel.

The story is standard zombie apocalypse, and it's not done poorly.

The characters' reactions to each other aren't particularly believable, and then I came to this gem of a comment "Unfortunately, the females have no idea how to operate these weapons and this was something that needed to be fixed soon."

Yeah, the "females" are largely perfunctory. Still, there are zombies, danger, and obstacles overcome with generous Deus ex machina, so what's not to love?

a decent world and story is ruined by an endless series of clichés. I can't tell if the narrator has a limited emotional range or is just suffering from poor writing.
