Historia
In early 2001, a lethal disease breaks out on the hill farms of northern England, emptying the valleys of sheep and filling the skies with smoke as they burn the carcasses. Two neighboring shepherds lose everything and set their sights on a wealthy farm in the south with its flock of prizewinning animals. So begins the dark tale of Steve Elliman and William Herne. As their sheep rustling leads to more and more difficult decisions, the struggles of the land are never far away. Steve’s only distraction is his growing fascination with William’s enigmatic and independent wife, Helen.

Too dark
Revisado: 12-01-24
DNF. WAY too dark for me. Graphic animal killing which admittedly was necessary due to disease but not what I want to read.

Historia
Emily Emerson is used to being alone; her dad ran out on the family when she was just a kid, her mom died when she was 17, and her beloved grandmother has just passed away as well. But when she's laid off from her reporting job, she finds herself completely at sea until the day she receives a beautiful, haunting painting of a young woman standing at the edge of a sugarcane field under a violet sky. That woman is recognizable as her grandmother - and the painting arrived with no identification other than a handwritten note saying, "He always loved her."

Too much whining
Revisado: 11-22-24
Actually a pretty good story but the protagonist whined constantly and the author was way too repetitive. Could have easily have knocked 50 pages off without losing any story with some good content editing.

Couldn’t finish. Horrible narration IMHO. R
Revisado: 10-25-24
Sounded like AI robot although apparently y he is a popular narrator. I do t understand why. I found him annoying and distracting. I wanted to like and I really tried for scout 2 hours.

Dogmatic and preachy.
Revisado: 01-25-24
Well written and narrated but felt like an ad for AA. Most depressing book I’ve ever read and I’ve read Sophie’s Choice.

Poor narration
Revisado: 12-02-23
Perhaps if I’d been able to read this I would have enjoyed it more. Poor vision has relegated me to listening to all my books now. The female narrator was supposed to be a middle aged woman reflecting back. She sounds like a teenager and the narration was flat and without emotion, much like a child learning to read a primer.
The male narrator was ok. The story was largely predictable and overall not as good as I’d hoped which was
Ia shame as I was really looking forward to this one.
