Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Excellent voice acting
Revisado: 11-28-24
Wonderful adaptation, true to the original. I'm a little bit leery of dramatic adaptations of Christie since that trend some years ago where screenwriters (screenwrights?) began tossing improbable subplots and relationships into their screenplays to spice things up or modernize them. In that case, please write an entirely new story. When I listen to/watch/read Christie, I want the original, stepping back to the time and place she was creating. However, this adaptation was perfection, and the acting was superb. // I first read The Mysterious Affair at Styles when I was a kid in the 70s, though I hadn't read it or watched an adaptation in years, so while I was fuzzy on the details, I did remember whodunnit. This didn't detract from my enjoyment, since the construction of the adaptation and the quality of the acting were so good.

Imaginative and original
Revisado: 08-20-20
Really enjoyed this, and am finding it especially pertinent these days. I began listening to it shortly after it was published, but life interment and I was only able to get back into it today. it was so engrossing that I only stopped listening when I had to, and finished the last several hours of it all in one day.
There's a clear message in the book, but it doesn't come across as preachy. The narrator really inhabits the character of April May, and this is one of those rare books that may be as good or better as an audiobook than in print.

Historia
In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost 40 years in the making. The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all.

Fun, nutty, suspenseful, and satisfying
Revisado: 02-12-20
I really loved this. Hearing Tom Baker narrating just put it over the top for me. Complex but clear storyline that just keeps driving through. Feels so authentic, it could have been a Classic multipart story, but it makes lovely nods to new Who as well. Tom Baker sure knows his canon -- and not just from his own era. I laughed at the appearance of his "former selves" and references to monsters he'd met during earlier incarnations.
I'm a huge fan of Big Finish audios, so I have listened to a fair number of Doctor Who audio stories, and this ranks up there as one of the very best.
Very glad I got this as an Audible book, since listening to Tom was a large part of the pleasure.

Historia
Across the planet, the silver legions stand impassive in every city; mankind has sacrificed its freedoms for the sake of a distant conflict against its android creations, and now the price must be paid. On the streets, in the depths of space, a web of lies and deceit draws ever tighter, and the lines between human and android, between enemy and ally, are blurred. Only one choice remains - resist or surrender.

Great performances, gripping story
Revisado: 03-31-17
I'd listened to Cyberman 1 a few years ago, and when I saw that they're on Audible, I had to pick up part two with one of my credits. It's got political intrigue, ship-board mutiny, xenophobia, ordinary folks dealing with oppression and conquest, and Cybermen on every street corner as well as outer space. It was hard to turn off and I ended up listening much too late till I finished it.

Masterful Doctor Who Adventure!

Stands out in my memory
Revisado: 05-30-15
Where does Doctor Who: Harvest of Time (3rd Doctor Novel) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best unabridged audiobooks -- as opposed to radio plays or audio dramas (such as those by Big Finish) -- that I have listened to. It is one of the top two or three Audible books I have listened to.
What other book might you compare Doctor Who: Harvest of Time (3rd Doctor Novel) to and why?
If you listened to Wheel of Ice (a Second Doctor book), that's the one that is most like it that I have listened to. However, the scope of Harvest of Time is greater, and overall, the story appealed to me more. At some point, I mean to read it in its non-audio format, I liked it so much. Both stories, though, do a good job of capturing the eras in which they are set but without being overly restrained by them. Harvest of Time is more complex and less action-oriented than Wheel of Ice.
Which character – as performed by Geoffrey Beevers – was your favorite?
Beevers did an especially excellent job as the Master, a role he performs regularly for Big Finish, and I've thought it a pity that he wasn't able to play the Master more back in the television series -- and not just the moldering version of him. He also did a very creditable Third Doctor, with no jarring imitations of Pertwee.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the Master is honest with the Doctor, and the Doctor doesn't believe him -- and then the Doctor regrets it because the Master was, for once, being sincere and truthful. Don't want to say much more than that -- no spoilers!
Any additional comments?
Geoffrey Beevers really is a fabulous narrator. He set a very high bar for other audiobooks I've since listened to. I don't think there's another who has done better, though a very few have just about measured up, and many others have disappointed me.
