How is this a follow up to annihilation?! There’s no plot. Just insane ramblings. Only one real event in the entire book and that’s at the end. Beyond frustrating

Alexis Hall, please stop putting scenes with graphic m*rder of animals in your books. There’s no good message in it. It’s simply abhorring. Ruined an otherwise really enjoyable story.

Really enjoyed the first two books and this one was fun too until 3/4 into the story the author decided to spring a graphic SA scene on me. I’ve no patience for that. Stop putting this stuff in queer books!!! DNF

Could barely finish

Drowning in meaningless metaphors like “his heart was a hot pulsing liquid in his ears”. Are you saying his heart is earwax? What is this?! I wish the author spent time working on his characters, none of which had any personality. Other than their powers, I can’t even tell you what kind of people they were. There is nothing distinct about any of the friends or the love interest. 400 pages of nonsense and author trying to prove that he knows words.

So disappointed

Literally none of the plot or the character interactions made sense. If you’re gonna keep two guys in their 20s away from each other, you better give them a real emotional reason for that. The absence of a relationship development between Simon and Baz is beyond disappointing and frustrating. I would have forgiven the sloppy ending and the non existing villain, had the author bothered to give her characters depth but alas...

beautiful writing; storytelling falls very short

I was willing to give the book 3 stars for occasionally pretty prose until I read the ending... which is not an ending at all. Barely anything is explained and it's full of holes. Characterization and the relationships between characters don't make sense. [mild spoilers ahead] You can't have people beating the hell out of each other suddenly confess their feelings in the cheesiest, most useless scene in the book (because come on, you can't just teach someone to shoot like an expert in 5 minutes), and then the two get into a stupid fight and we don't see the main character's object of affection for many pages. It just makes no sense.
Also in a world where there's literally trees growing out of people's bodies, how come no one asks the vital question "what the hell is going on with us?". Nobody is even panicking much. When one of the girls disappears and wakes up with a doctor by her side she doesn't burst with questions either. It's just unrealistic. No real human being would act that way in the circumstances. Book is full of those kinds of situations and that's ultimately why it doesn't work. Considering that the main idea is taken straight out of Annihilation, it's inexcusable to not have a story and characters that make sense
