Historia
In this boldly optimistic debut memoir, Hayley Arceneaux details how she overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to grab hold of a life greater than she’d ever imagined. With her signature upbeat messaging, Arceneaux recounts her odyssey, from her cancer diagnosis at age ten and the yearlong treatment that inspired her goal of working with pediatric cancer patients, to living through her father’s terminal cancer diagnosis, to getting her lifelong dream job at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a physician assistant.

Great outsider’s perspective on splaceflight
Revisado: 11-10-24
I’ve read almost every astronaut autobiography, and I’m always fascinated to hear how each person describes their experiences with spaceflight. Most are fairly similar, but Hayley’s perspective, having found herself very suddenly going to space, was a new one. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good but one chapter was completely unnecessary
Revisado: 11-13-23
I thoroughly enjoyed the Apollo Murders, and I was beyond excited to read this next installment. My excitement was further elevated to find Ray Porter narrated the book. He is, after all, the best audiobook narrator around. Porter certainly lived up to his reputation, and the narration is pitch perfect throughout.
Everything went swimmingly storywise until one fateful chapter. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say if you are an animal lover, you should skip the chapter about an animal. I wish I had. It was completely unnecessary to the story and almost ruined an otherwise amazing book for me.
Despite this frustration, I will likely read the next in the series should there be one. I just hope there are no animal chapters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end. I was worried that it might not live up to the hype of the previous rave reviews, but it certainly did.

Historia
Eileen Collins was an aviation pioneer her entire career, from her crowning achievements as the first woman to command an American space mission as well as the first to pilot the space shuttle to her early years as one of the Air Force's first female pilots. She was in the first class of women to earn pilot's wings at Vance Air Force Base and was their first female instructor pilot. She was only the second woman admitted to the Air Force's elite Test Pilot Program at Edwards Air Force Base.

Nassau?
Revisado: 02-13-22
Why, oh why, does an otherwise perfectly fine narrator insist on mispronouncing NASA? As another reviewer pointed out, Ms. Secours pronounces NASA as Nassau. I kept wondering what the Bahamian city had to do with anything before I finally realized she meant NASA. Unfortunately, in an astronaut memoir, NASA is mentioned quite frequently. Another minor gripe is that she has apparently never heard a launch countdown. Instead “t minus ten seconds,” she merely says “t ten.” For aircraft, however, such as the T-38, she reads the hyphen aloud as a dash: “t dash 38.” Very strange and annoying errors for any space geek.
Aside from those issues, it’s a great book.

Must read for space geeks
Revisado: 02-04-22
I was sad when I got to end of Into the Blue Gemini, but upon discovering that I still had two books left in the series, my spirits immediately lifted. Of course, now that I’ve finished the series, I’m sad again all over.
These books are a must-listen for any space geek or even just a lover of Cold War thrillers. Jenne’s technical accuracy is utterly impeccable to my amateur ears, and his character development is even better. As well, the story itself never slows, and you always seem to want to listen for, “just one more chapter.”
Likewise, the narrator for the series, Kevin Stillwell, was a perfect choice. Stillwell nailed at least eight different regional accents and offered perfect impressions of two different presidents. His reading and acting truly brought the story to life. I sincerely hope that Stillwell voices more of Jenne’s work, and I will be patiently waiting.
