Historia
Even as a girl Morgan has always been wild, like the seas which batter the cliffs beneath her home, Tintagel Castle. But she has always been safe, too. Then one day her father is called away to a war from which he does not return. In his place comes the High King, Uther Pendragon, with the sorcerer Merlin lurking in his wake. Uther claims Morgan’s mother, the Lady Igraine as his queen.

My least favorite Three Pines
Revisado: 01-23-23
I hate when actors/athletes/and now authors spew their political views, as if I have been waiting for them to weigh in so I could figure out how I’m supposed to think! ARGH! When Ms. Penny buddied up with Clinton, I simply chose not to buy the book. But when I nestle down with what I hope is a catch-up with my Three Pines favorites, and a good mystery, I don’t expect to read/hear someone else’s party line. I genuinely hope Ms. P. Gets back to what made her books so good.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 09-10-22
I’ve been a follower of this series but couldn’t finish this one. I’m pretty lenient with narrators but when the main character’s name is Childress and you pronounce it Child-ress instead of Chiil-dress…argh! I found myself listening for hours and not knowing what was going on. Sadly, this one is being returned.

Tedious repetition
Revisado: 08-27-22
Rory’ story is repeated about every five minutes. It’s the first time I wished for an abridged version. Story is so-so. I think there are far better listens out there. Save your credit.

Ms. Rudd is among a small group of narrators that I will never listen to again. Robotic, rushed and uninspired. The story is subpar. Really surprised I finished it.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path.

I continue to be amazed!
Revisado: 08-07-17
Each book in this series contains a murder that Gamache and crew investigate. That, in and of itself, makes for a good read. What takes this series to the next level is the continuing back story...life in Quebec, trouble between Gamache and his boss, Anglophones verses Francophones, and, of course the character development of the citizens of Three Pines. The characters in these stories are such genuine people: kind, funny, intelligent, scared, flawed but real. With each book my feelings have deepened. A very special series.

A squandered idea.
Revisado: 07-21-16
This story could have been far better than it was. The premise of two mob bosses being in a prearranged marriage is interesting. What you end up with is a pi**ing contest. He's an arrogant a** and she is a petulant child. The dialogue is peppered with gratuitous swearing, threats, demands and sex. Instead of smart, sexy and engaging it was dull, smutty and unimaginative. Pass.

"Th Brutal Telling," the title says more than you can first imagine.
Revisado: 06-05-16
A fan of this series, I feel as though I know the town of Three Pines and the cast of characters. They are loving and witty but not without their faults. Just like us. Penny does a wonderful job of peeling back the layers of these people to see all the good and bad. Their worries and regrets. Their joys and their secrets. This book makes that the central character.
In reading "The Brutal Telling," you will meet new towns folk, have a dead body being moved about, and a cabin in the woods full of the most amazing treasures. Claire prepares for her art show which will surely catapult her to fame, while Peter struggles with his jealousy of her. Ruth is her usual brassy self, tormenting Jean Guy with pieces of verse and dressing her pet duck in clothing. I especially love that she puts her in a rain jacket of all things!
Gabrie and Olivia take the brunt of the mystery, as the dead body is discovered in their bistro. This amid a soon to open upscale B&B/spa that will surely hurt their business. Our beloved Inspector Gamache has his hands full with this murder mystery. He has few leads, lots of questions and is knowingly being lied to by a friend.

A good thriller
Revisado: 04-14-16
Just read the synopsis for the book and you'll be compelled to download it. A small time thief finds a bag contains $350,000, decides to keep it and leave town. As he settles down to meatloaf in a town diner, he hears a cell phone within the bag ring. Deciding to answer the call, a young girl states to our thief "Daddy, they said they would let me go if you bring them the money."
So, I was hooked. The book was in a little slow in parts, and unbelievable in many ( although that rarely bothers me -- it's fiction!) But I was compelled to listen every chance I could. I will definitely by looking for more listens by Mr. Hankins.
