Historia
The lines. No ship can traverse the void without them. Only linesmen can work with them. But only Ean Lambert hears their song. And everyone thinks he's crazy.... Most slum kids never go far, certainly not becoming a level 10 linesman like Ean. Even if he's part of a small and unethical cartel, and the other linesmen disdain his self-taught methods, he's certified and working. Then a mysterious alien ship is discovered at the edges of the galaxy.

Unique and fascinating world building
Revisado: 12-25-17
The concept of the "lines" is unique and well thought out, with the characters all well rendered. The story treads the well-worn "misunderstood outsider in over his head" plot line, but not in an overly predictable way. A bit slow paced at times, and the main character's level of self-doubt seemed a bit overwrought. But, overall, well worth the listen. The spoken performance was solid, but the characters could be made a tad more distinct. There were a few times it was hard to tell which character was speaking.

Historia
In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one. He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything. Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game. Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities. With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job. His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Misogyny, Slavery, Mindless Violence
Revisado: 11-15-17
There are do many things wrong with the book, some of them disturbingly wrong. The overriding theme of the book is the purchasing and absolute control of slaves. Virtually all of the slaves are women, and the main character has no moral problem with ownership of slaves nor with having sex with slaves. It sadly reads like a puerile women-as-objects male fantasy. To compound this, all of the women are happy to be slaves. The author managed to fit in every single negative cliche about women -- if you can think it up, its in there.
Managing conflict is something the author struggles with, always killing off characters (sometimes in violently gruesome ways) to move the plot forward. Its about as subtle as a teen slasher movie.
Finally, the main character earns "points" based upon the number of slaves he has, and is able to convert those points into cash. But, the economics and math just don't make any sense.
The only saving grace is the narration. The narrator does an excellent job, even if the material was not worth the effort.
I would have returned the book for a credit, but then Audible won't let you review it. So, I sacrificed a credit so you didn't have to listen to this. Your welcome.

Brilliant, tense and literary
Revisado: 03-17-17
Where does The Hike rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The best book I have read all year so far. Unlike anything I have read in a long time -- completely original, deft use of plot, and well imagined characters.
Any additional comments?
I simply don't understand the negative comments and reviews. This book is nothing short of fantastic.

Rare Genuinely Humorous SF
Revisado: 02-24-16
What does Kate Rudd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Kate Rudd does a fabulous job bringing Sasha to life. She got deep into the Sasha character that brought the book to life. Her voice characterizations of the male characters are a bit hit-n-miss, but overall well done.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This is really something that would likely not translate to film in a meaningful way, Many of the best (funniest) parts are Sasha's internal dialogue, which would be extremely difficult to bring to the big screen,
