Surgical Weaving of Ethiopia, Medicine, Drama
Revisado: 02-05-21
Very long saga of doctors & religious missionary nurses from India immigrating to Ethiopia in mid 20th century, political upheaval, poverty, incredible medical skill in the midst of archaic medical resources, improbable families, twins born to "sainted" nun who died in childbirth, implications of the twin boys' birth & origin woven throughout the novel often with obvious fictional coincidences (deus de machina at work here) so the story unfolds to include the main protagonists despite their separate paths. Many tragic events & reconciliations & triumphs.

African tribes complicit with British slave trade
Revisado: 11-02-20
History of African tribes cooperating with colonial British slave traders for money & prestige. Story of two half- sisters (same mother) in tribal lands in Africa begins in the 18th century in the country that is now Ghana, one sister married a White British slave trader & her descendants benefitted from her status while the other sister was captured by a slave trading tribe that conquered her village. She & her descendants were sold into slavery & suffered thru centuries of the American slave economy & Jim Crow & racism to the present day. This is historical fiction that depicts horrific stories of children & families ripped apart & brutalized as slavery & racism were dominant in American culture. Well written; author's focus on the characters adds to the emotional drama & tells a huge saga underlying American mythology about the origins & actual human toll on which the American economic dream was built. The male narrator's voice fit the male characters throughout the book as history changed their manner of speech but Audible could have added a woman to narrate the female characters, resulting in a more intense depiction of the story.

Interesting Story But Not Convincing 100 Yrs Ago
Revisado: 07-11-20
Women's rights vs Traditional Religious Customs 100 yrs ago in Upper Echelon India where Indian upper class mingled with British occupying force in 1920's India when British Empire still controlled the government. Written in style of Young Adult fiction. In the real world of today, it's depressing that many of the Women's issues raised in this novel are still prevalent in religious sectors in India & around the world including the U.S. where health insurance is tied to employment & women's access to insurance coverage for birth control depends on religious whims of their employers. The story in this novel depicts domestic abuse, murders, intrigue to cheat innocent women of their inheritances & relationships between adults & their parents. Not clear that author was accurate about life among rich Indian families in 1920's but it's fiction. The narrator did a great job dramatizing the characters' voices.

Intimate Charming Autobiography
Revisado: 03-21-20
Margaret Trudeau's narration is charming & honest. She tells several humorous and poignant stories of her life, never disregarding the privileged milieu where she sits. As wife of Canada's Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, she met many world leaders & was treated as royalty but she also suffered from bipolar disorder that caused many of her misadventures. She describes how she came to terms with her illness & offers hope & resilience as a woman of her generation.

Historia
Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

21st Century Families in the U.S.
Revisado: 12-22-18
Andrew Sullivan describes various family configurations, gay parents, single parents, polyamorous parents, multi-generational, childless & child-free families. All groupings are valid & can provide loving homes for children & partners. Sullivan debunks typical biases against non-nuclear male-female parents. He asks Americans to open their hearts & recognize that people can choose alternative family groups. One concern however is the potential for exploitation of vulnerable parents & children by more dominant members of the family unit. This tips closely to the dangers of cult brainwashing, especially in the polyamorous groupings.

Historia
If your funny older sister were the former deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama, her behind-the-scenes political memoir would sound something like this. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is an intimate and admiring portrait of a president, a candid book of advice for young women, and a promising debut from a savvy political star.

Self-centered, unbalanced woman. Disappointing.
Revisado: 06-05-18
i understand that Alyssa intended to write about her personal & emotional experience. And I appreciate her respect & loyalty to my dearly missed President Obama. However due to her superficial description of interactions at work & her relations with co-workers & friends, I didn't get a sense of the gravitas or her passion for Obama's policies or a sense that she cared about the policies other than the last chapter. Her stories of her interactions with associates in the political sphere were overshadowed by her generic descriptions of her work in the highest eschelons of politics. According to Alyssa, there was no meaning to her work other than the details. She could have been describing her jobs in any large hierarchical organization. Basically, the book is a waste of time.

Contrived crime stories, superficial characters
Revisado: 05-04-18
Sort of like a Readers Digest version of crime stories & legal procedurals. The main story, which focuses on a man's rape allegation against his female boss, is contrived, unbelievable, and trivializes actual rape crimes where men typically overpower women. Book is ultimately unsatisfying, especially the contrived "happy endings."
