Historia
In April 1865, after nearly five years of bitter civil war, Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. Soon after, Richmond lay in ruins, Lincoln had been assassinated, and the terrible war, which had cost some 600,000 American lives, was not yet over. Many of the Confederate commanders still in the field that fateful April were prepared to fight a guerrilla war that might have prolonged the conflict indefinitely.

Interesting material but not the greatest lecturer

Deceptive and Poorly done
Revisado: 03-13-08
This, oddly enough, is a poorly done lecture, not a reading of the book. The grammar, diction, and style are distracting to the point that one finds it difficult to stay focussed on the content. I could not even bring myself to finish it. Save your money.

Historia
The descendants of Richard and Anne Lee have occupied a preeminent place in American history. They were among the first families of Virginia. Two were signers of the Declaration of Independence; several others distinguished themselves during the Revolutionary War; and one, Robert E. Lee, remains widely known.

Interesting, yet mechanical
Revisado: 12-05-06
Nagel's books ties the Lee family to much of the formative events of American history from the early Jamestown colony to the American Civil War. He does a masterful job of connecting the dots, but, due to the similarity of names (which his tries to clarify), it can still be hard to follow. Lovers of U. S. history will enjoy the insights of this volume.
The audio version of this book is it's biggest downfall. The narrator's cadence, inflection, and style make it sound like a computer generated "reading." It takes some effort to get used to his style.
