The great ethical dilemmas of life are played out in the form of human archetypes embedded in gorgeous prose.
I thought I didn’t like Steinbeck. This was a revelation.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

The most frightening book I have ever read.
Revisado: 04-23-24
This is a superb, terrifying book.
Most of us go through our lives in a state of denial about the perils of nuclear war.
Read this and that denial will be shattered. Annie Jacobson will make you an eye witness to the single hour it takes to doom human civilization over most of the earth — and then to an aftermath
that makes our most horrific imaginings of hell seem tame.
You will be both appalled and very well informed.
This should be required reading for anyone who aspires to lead us into the future. And a warning that only the most stable and sane leaders should be allowed to do so.
Most of all, this is a most eloquent illustration of the insanity of nuclear weapons. It should inspire all who read it to do whatever is possible to eliminate these weapons before they eliminate us.
After you read this, you won’t ever again be tempted to think that old doomsday clock poised a few minutes from midnight is an exaggeration…

A Path Into the Dark
Revisado: 02-16-24
Paul went on before you. He left you this gift. Your way out will be different than his- but probably similar enough to make reading this book both valuable and memorable. He had the advantages of intelligence, deep knowledge, determination, and the loving support of many. He became a promising, highly capable and esteemed young physician. And then he was faced with losing it all. This is his story.

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Fate versus chance – a perennial question
Revisado: 06-10-23
This is a well written examination of what the modern world would become if the universe were governed by irresistible fate. How would that change our behavior, our life, decisions, our social institutions? It’s a story of the challenges and triumphs of the human spirit in the face of the inevitable.
