Historia
While her parents attend a work party, eighteen-year-old Ella Romero is left in charge of her two siblings—thirteen-year-old Nicholas and eight-year-old Arianna—at their secluded lake house. In her usual fashion, Ella invites her friends to hang out while her parents are away, too. It was supposed to be an easy, quiet, normal night.

Brutally gruesome home invasion
Revisado: 10-05-24
This book has a tired premise, reminiscent of every slasher movie from the exploitation era of the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. Not that this is a bad thing, as many a frightful film came out in that period. But if you’re expecting a refreshing, original novel this might not be the best choice.
The characters play out well, but that should always be expected in a Jon Athan novel. He has written some of the best splatter punk/extreme horror books over the last few years. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them.
The narration was on point and never slacked off,
The biggest problem with this book is that the violence felt like something out of an Aron Beauregard novel, Jon is usually more reliable in his depictions of depravity. I would recommend one of his other novels first, before venturing into this book. If you like his style, as I do, you will still enjoy the novel, as I did. It is just not one of his best. Still worthy of more stars than any Beauregard work, though.

Historia
Jake Leonard has more than his share of trouble. He’s close to 40 now and still suffers from bipolar disorder and the painful memories of the psychotic episodes that derailed his life and sent him behind bars. He lives in the rural South, where he spends his days breaking horses and his nights training dogs in solitude. His 19-year-old girlfriend Nikki is the daughter of the sheriff, and she’s just getting worse with drugs, alcohol, and satanic metal.

Good literary fiction
Revisado: 08-23-24
The story was excellent and compelling. Coming from an author that typically writes Extreme Horror I find it necessary to say that this novel is not horror. It, like his more extreme novels, was beautifully written and richly imagined.

The irrationality of youth.
Revisado: 04-30-22
Forewarning, this book is not perfect and definitely not for everyone. The story was being told through the point of view of a character I could easily liken to any Tarrantino protagonist, (and the exuberance in the dark humor definitely didn't distract from the Tarrantino vibes). There was a childlike glee in each horrendous act, making our narrator seem relatable even in her most degenerate act of sexual brutality and sadistic murder. The combination of whimsy in the written word and the outstanding performance of the narrator made Kim seem human even when she was behaving like a demon.
My only complaint is the reliance on some tropes that I believe to be a bit dated. The heavy emphasis on the BDSM torture porn and graphic horror films made for small blemishes in an otherwise beautiful and original portrait of madness. But these small nods to infamous video nasties didn't take away from the landscape of misery enough to sour my opinion.
Cheers to the author and the narrator!

As a sequel to a fantastic novel this book is similar to direct to video sequels of blockbusters. If horrible was a tangible element it would embody itself in the form of this novel.
