The story sucked me in
Revisado: 06-30-24
It took me a little bit to get into this book, but then the story-line somehow sucked me in and I had to keep listening.
This is a spicy book, so be prepared for that. I love good character development and Robinne Lee delivered on that for sure. The book was well-written and it was fun to live a luxurious life and experience fame from the inside.
The plot made sense and while you could see it coming in some ways, it still felt original and fresh, unlike many other books in this genre.
The performance was solid. I typically don’t like it when authors read their own books—I think they are too close to the subject, but the author’s acting background was apparent, and the dialogue was especially performed well.
Now I have to go watch the movie!

Love Mary Beth Keane, but this was my least favorite
Revisado: 06-16-24
Mary Beth Keane writes believable characters and stories. She’s one of my favorite authors. However, Malcolm and Jess didn’t always ring true for me. I kept thinking of them as being in their 20s, when they were supposed to be in their 30s & 40s. I did feel that many of their life travails were relatable—infertility, marriage problems, work problems, etc. The subplot of fraud was interesting but didn’t completely tie into the story line. Ask Again Yes & Fever are two of my favorite Mary Beth Keane books & I would give both of them 5 stars. This book was not as solid. The narration was good.

Witty and funny
Revisado: 03-21-24
An enjoyable book with endearing characters. For sure, Poppy can be a little annoying and Alex a little too perfect, but their vacations are great light reading. The dialogue made me laugh, their budget trips and dysfunctional family situations felt real, and I wanted them to figure out their relationship. Yes, you will figure out where it’s headed long before it gets there, but it’s a fun trip. Great light listen with a terrific narrator.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Clever and funny
Revisado: 02-09-24
Terry Pratchett is a very skillful writer and I loved the play of words and language in this book. The only problem I had with the book is that I felt it jumped around too much at times. The story probably would be easier to follow as a physical book vs an audiobook; however, that being said, the narration was excellent and very entertaining.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Interesting and well-told
Revisado: 01-24-24
The book conveyed a great amount of information about breathing in an easy to understand and listen to storyline. Many of the techniques are harmless and easy to try. Others seem ill-advised. Good listen but use with caution, especially if you have a health condition!

Good, but inconsistent
Revisado: 01-15-24
Overall, I enjoyed the plot twists and storyline in this book. However, the pacing was inconsistent as were the characters. They kept insisting about how smart they were, but then kept making poor choices. The narrator for Lee had an unusual rhythm to her performance, as her voice went up in pitch at the ends of sentences. Hazels narrator’s performance was better and more enjoyable. I would give this 3.5 to 4 stars, as some parts were better than others.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Original and Unexpected
Revisado: 01-08-24
This book was a solid “like” for me. Great narration, lots of twists, informative on a number of topics, and good representation of a population whose voice hasn’t been heard very much. Certain parts of the story felt repetitive at times (teenage love) and then other parts felt like they were boom and done, with not much elaboration (the final outcome). Overall, though, I found this to be an enjoyable and informative listen.

This book contains a very comprehensive guide to brain health and cognitive decline. For those in healthcare, some may find some parts repetitive or too basic. However, overall it provided foundational knowledge on brain anatomy and function, tips for keeping and improving cognition, aging brains, types of dementia, and care for those with memory needs. A very good guide that encompasses what anyone can do to maintain or improve overall health and a healthy brain.

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Sweet story, especially for animal lovers
Revisado: 11-08-23
This was an endearing coming-of-age novel told as a man looks back on his life- changing events.
I love animals, and giraffes, and character-driven story lines. This fit the bill, although it was equally as plot-driven as it was character-driven. I loved following along on the giraffe’s and Woody Nickel’s journey west and the events that took place along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters in this book, but the interactions between Woody and the old man (a zookeeper in charge of the giraffes) were my favorites.
I also loved the old phrases and expressions used—my mom has used many of these for years!
I will admit the narrator had to grow on me a bit at first, but once I had settled into his voice and style, I loved his performance, as well.
Strongly recommend giving this one a try—very original and entertaining!
