Historia
Rome, 90 BC. Quintus Sertorius is tired. Weary after eight years of warfare in Greece, the decorated hero longs to reunite with his family and repair their frayed bond. But no sooner has he returned than Rome is thrust into war again. This time, the attackers are their closest allies, the Italian tribes surrounding them. To make matters worse, Sertorius learns his son has joined the legion under the command of a scheming rival looking to exert leverage.

Solid except for one thing...
Revisado: 03-24-25
I guess the author felt pressured to insert a LGBQT+ commercial in the middle of the story, but he should have just said no. It was out of place, and out of character.
I know that publishers and guilds pressure authors to include woke material in every book, and that it is hard for an author to resist the pressure, but it is a mistake to aquiesse when you are writing books like this.

A little to PC at times, but a good yarn
Revisado: 07-17-22
The author gets on his PC soap box now and again, but it's a good story in spite of all that.

The worst book in the series
Revisado: 06-25-22
David VanDyke's fingerprints are all over this book.
I enjoy all of BV Larson's books, and I generally dislike the stuff that VanDyke puts out. There is a big difference. Vandyke's characters are generally seedy and morally questionable. They do bad things and the reader is expected to forgive their short comings and give them an overall thumbs up. BV Larson, on the other hand, does not make his characters perfect, but they do not commit the same "type" of distasteful acts that Vandyke's characters typically commit. They might do bad things, but they don't do loathsome things. It's not easy to describe really. The bottom like is that Larson's books are more enjoyable where Vandyke's books leave you feeling a bit dirty and compromised.
VanDyke's influence is everywhere in this work, which is unfortunate.

"I said" "Frank said"
Revisado: 03-11-22
Once you notice how many times the author says "I said" or "Frank said" you feel like pulling your hair out. It's non-stop. I'm not a talented author, but even I know that you should tell a story without repeating "blank said" over and over and over again.
The story line is linear and predictable, it's about as gripping as having someone read the dictionary out loud. The writing itself has color, but the plot is grayscale. The author has talent, and a sense of humor, but he needs to work on a more interesting way of developing the story, instead of just describing events as they ramble along. And he needs to stop using "blank said" as a crutch.
And that's what She Said.

Hurry, Hurry, Hurry
Revisado: 03-10-22
Everyone is advancing at high speed. The plot is thin and hurried. It feels like the author quit trying, and that he just wants everything to be over and done.

Just yesterday, Ben was a petty criminal getting by on fleecing New York’s one-percenters. Today, he's got a new face, a new name, and a new world to navigate. And Ben’s thinking maybe this time around, he’ll use his skills at disarming and deceiving to help out people other than himself. Maybe. Leaves you feeling dirty
Revisado: 01-06-22
The protagonist is a thief that hates the rich. Yet, at one point in the story he expresses a desire to be rich himself. I hoped that all of the. "I've been held down by other people and that gives me the right to do whatever I want attitude," would eventually be replaced with a less entitled, less juvenile-delinquent attitude, but I was disappointed.
An editor once said, "I can tell in the first few pages of a book if the author likes people." Well, it's pretty clear that Eric (the author of this book) does not. Out of the mouth the heart speaks. Of course, He tries to justify the protagonist's immoral, narcissistic, and hypocritical perspective, but it all just leaves you feeling dirty.

Historia
Lieutenant John Pearce is in London seeking protection for his friends, the Pelicans, from a reluctant Admiralty. Sitting in the tavern where they were first press ganged, Pearce considers his future. Lacking the evidence of perjury he once had to bring Captain Ralph Barclay to justice, his prospects are not promising. Ralph Barclay’s young wife, Emily, is refusing to live under the same roof as him and she has the means to get her own way: the evidence Pearce believes was lost at sea.

a repetitive, uninspired soap opera
Revisado: 08-09-20
I didn't finish it. The books of the John Piece series get worse and worse. I kept thinking that they would eventually get better (the first book in the series was interesting.) I persisted as long as I could, but I have given up hope. I will return all of them for credits.

Way to obvious
Revisado: 03-27-20
The big "twist" in the story is way to obvious, to predictable. And the buildup leading to the "twist" lasts way to long, which makes for a long painful streach.
