The author places Boone in the greater context of the huge upheaval that was going on in the 18th century American colonies and early republic. It makes for a compelling portrayal but the writing style is often too florid and grandiose for a historical account. Well worth the 20 hours of listening though.

Mr. Rinella’s delivery of his own words is like he’s telling you the whole story over a round of beers. It’s completely engaging even if he is a bit gaga over the animal. This is history— somewhat like Twains Feast. But also it’s a relatable story for anyone who’s spent time in the wild.

This is scholarly work and the author takes his time to place his work in the context of other works. Not for everyone. It was good to learn about a period of American history that is not given much attention in school or at least not with the business perspective.

The presentation is challenging. A bit like the sound track for a junior high film strip. I don’t fault the narrator, but the producer.
