Historia
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

Very Disappointed
Revisado: 02-19-07
Don't get me wrong here - Upto "Off Armageddon Reef?" I was a big fan and an avid listener of David Webber & his writing partner John Ringo's books. When this current book became available from Audible I downloaded the book immediately and looked forward to a solid 30+ hours of entertainment. The big problem for me is after a solid 15 hrs of Oliver Wymans clear and interesting dialog a slow realisation of "Where Have I heard that line before?" began to nag like the slow drip of a loose spigot in the kitchen.
The more I listened the more my thoughts began to wander to the Prince Roger Series (We Few - The March up Country & March to the Sea). As I had all of these books in my download library I listened to the whole series again. Shockingly I realised that large parts of "Off Armageddon Reef" were no more that a plagiarism of the "Prince Roger" series of books. Okay, names places were changed but style storyline and characters are easily identifiable.
After finishing listening to "Off Armageddon Reef" I felt so very disappointed cheated out of what I hoped was going to be a new and exhilaration journey of great story telling. The book was completely spoilt as I kept involuntary comparing the story line to the "Prince Roger" books in my library and finding many similarities.
Finally if this is your first visit to the world of David Webber and you enjoy listening to a 30+ hour saga's you will not be disappointed it's a solid and enjoyable listen but full on Sci-Fi it is not.

Historia
Alien battle fleets converge on earth at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Technology and intrigue blend to form a graphic study of politics, morality, and the brutality of total war. A bitter, hard fought war is raging that ranges from the depths of interstellar space, to a nuclear Battle of the Atlantic, to savage assassinations, and Machiavellian usurpations of power and control.

Cats & Pigs in Space?
Revisado: 02-12-05
I chose to download "A Small Percentage," much against the dire warning and judgment of the other reviewers who indicated that the narration and sound effects were so dire. (More of that later) This Sci-Fi tale both horrified and intrigued me and kept me interested enough to complete it I'll probably have to listen again at some time in the future.
The brutality of the main characters is just beyond compare, I was seriously beginning to wonder how Jim Cline (The Author) managed to think up so many ways to dismember, mutilate and generally destroy a human being and most of the human race for that matter. For all that the author tries to deliver a strong moral message in that people in power are mostly corrupt, the "Bexsus" acting as both invaders and police who without hesitation destroy the corrupt and criminally minded. As the book starts to fade into repetition and subsequent boredom a new race of invaders rear their ugly pig like self's quickly proving to be the equal of the "Bexsus" in brutality, shear nastiness and a total indifference to the welfare of the human race. As I listened on in morbid fascination a new intriguing reality came to my attention and that is the one thing that really kept me interested and listening.
The most horrific Audible Book I have listened to date? Probably. I'm not normally a seeker of gratuitous violence or the macabre, this book gave me nightmares and for some reason bugged me for days after wards. If that's what the author intended then he sure succeeded with me.
Finally the narration, is a typical Timber Wolf Press production, overblown characters and on occasion ridiculous sound effects, personally I enjoy Timber Wolf?s "OTT" presentations, it seems to fit the "Pulp Fiction" character of the books they produce

Historia
Ursis nodded soberly out the Hyperscreens toward the merchant ships, then turned to Brim. "Out there, Wilf Ansor," he brooded, "are real heroes of war. To fight from behind disruptors of warship is something anyone can do. One can always count on lucky shooting to save him from disaster, or heavy armor plate at least. But to face enemy with only black void and thin sheet of hullmetal separating you from disruptors, and then stay in formation, that is kind of bravery we Sodeskayans record in Great Books."

A Ripping Good Yarn
Revisado: 11-21-04
I have to say that after listening to "The Helmsman" every time I logged into my Audible account I looked to see if there were any other books published in the "Helmsman" series. After months of waiting, finally "Galactic Convoy" was posted.
I downloaded this book with great anticipation and set to for a marathon listening session, two days later and after some 13 hours of totally enthralled listening I was done. Bill Baldwin & Timberwolf Press have done it again, for sheer enjoyment probably the best Audible Science Fiction I have listened to date.
The main characters from the first book (The Helmsman) are all present and correct with a variety of the new that integrate seamlessly into the plot where the previous book left off. Bill Baldwin?s vivid imagination and descriptive ability, with the help of an excellent narrative cast put me right along side "Wilf".
As our hero "Wilf Ansor Brim" again forges his way through the galaxy in adventure after adventure, (which I found utterly addictive in every way) I was with "Friend Wilf" sharing his sadness and joy, visiting the worlds he went to and battled the leaguers right along side him. In a book I can ask no more than that.
This book is not a masterpiece of literature. However, if you like I enjoy a good ripping yarn that than entertained for a solid 13 hours then listen to this book. I have already checked to see if the next book is available, and unfortunately it?s not. (Take note Audible)

Historia
One of the few survivors of a League sneak attack on his poor and miserable homeworld of Carescria, Wilf Brim sets out to settle the score. Were it not for the attrition from the war that followed, Wilf would never have escaped his lower-class status and been accepted into the Academy. Now, freshly graduated, young Sublieutenant Wilf Ansor Brim, Imperial Fleet, begins his first assignment, Helmsman of the I.F.S. Truculent.

One of the best Audible books I have listened to so far. Wilf Brim takes you on an epic journey through space of war, high adventure, romance and a fascinating look at what the distant future may be. This book totally captured me in every way, Timberfwolf did a really great job with the sound effects and cast.
I've listened to the whole book twice in as many weeks and look forward to listening again soon.(Very unusal for me!) I very much hope and look forward to another Wilf A Brim space adventure - with his strange dichotomy of friends and their passion for "Logged Neeme"

Historia
Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. The crime was never resolved, and the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

Not for me
Revisado: 01-09-04
I alway know when I enjoy listening to an audio book as I generally listen again within a few days. This has not been the case with this novel.
"Lost Light" left me somewhat lost as to where the novel was trying to be, most certainly written in a style that recaptures some of the 50's greats in American crime writing. However taking this theme and trying to pull it into the 21st Century just did not work for me.
I also found the story line slow and contrived, there-again I've probably been reading to much "Ed McBane"
Finally, I found the narration artifical and somewhat forced in places.
