Loooove this narrator!!
Revisado: 05-04-23
The superb narration of this great book made it even better! I could actually see the facial expressions of the characters as the story was being read. The tone & inflection of voice, rate of speech, and thoughtful presentation are amazing.

Revisado: 09-13-22
Quick and to the point. Perfect for waiting in line or going for a very quick walk. More a long article, with general events & facts presented. Author tried to remain neutral & presented opposing views re the authenticity of the stones. Only drawback for me was the narrator had a heavy British accent but wasn't awful & just personal preference.

Historia
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Interesting
Revisado: 06-22-22
Good book, sad subject. Focuses on a young woman making a name in the porn industry only to take her own life. Jon is objective in telling this story, which must have been difficult. As one person intimates - the entire industry is reliant upon the emotionally damaged and mentally ill - not just the actors but the crew, directors, producers, partners of the actors, etc. Pretty astute statement and one I'd never really considered before.

Revisado: 06-22-22
A well thought out and extremely interesting series. Much food for thought provided. Jon succeeded in presenting many viewpoints and covered a great deal - from the beginning of streaming porn to those affected; those who profited and those who did not; societal repercussions, physical manifestations and the impact on mental health are also discussed. Very well done!

Historia
The witnesses are legion, scattered across the world and dotted through history, people who looked up and saw something impossible lighting up the night sky. What those objects were, where they came from, and who - or what - might be inside them is the subject of fierce debate and equally fierce mockery, so that most who glimpsed them came to wish they hadn't. Most, but not everyone.

This Book was Awful!
Revisado: 04-11-22
Okay, maybe when I began this book my expectations were too high. For some reason, I thought I'd learn something new or be enlightened about a thing or two.....nope. This book reads like a crappy dime store novel. The stories are rehashed versions of others I've heard literally dozens of times - Nazi development of alien tech; reporter is hunted because she possesses leaked top-secret information; military pilot see something he's not supposed to see. These stories have been done/rewritten in 100s of different ways and this isn't even an interesting take on a tired tale. Not for me, thanks.

Historia
In 1979, a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the US army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and, indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're back and fighting the War on Terror.

Jon, Why Didn't You Narrate This One Too?
Revisado: 09-10-13
Would you listen to The Men Who Stare at Goats again? Why?
No. The narrator was completely mismatched to the story - this is even more evident if you've listened to Jon Ronson's previous audio books, Them, Lost at Sea, etc, where he reads his own story (or stories). This narrator is so not-Jon-Ronson that it almost ruins the story, for me anyway. Sean Mangan is probably a fine narrator of other audio books, but just not this one. From his past books, you get a little taste of the author's personality and manner - this narrator, in my opinion, is totally contrary to that.
What other book might you compare The Men Who Stare at Goats to and why?
For content and story, I would compare it to Mr. Ronson's books, some listed above. He has a self-effacing style that is quite funny, but appropriately. He is not flip in a way that would lead you to believe he doesn't know the subject matter, because he researches each subject exhaustively. This shows when the author comments on a person or situation and references to a past experience or research and is done in a way that is interesting, not droning on as to bore you to death.
Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Mangan’s performances?
Maybe, if he were reading classical literature.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, if the author was the narrator.
Any additional comments?
Just that I have never had such a negative reaction to a narrator. The way this guy pronounces his words, as another reviewer pointed out, he says, "Mary-land", for example, and has other odd speaking habits you would not expect to hear from an American. He sounds like an American trying to do an impression of what he thinks an Ivy-League Professor would sound like. It's really weird and oddly deflating if you're expecting to hear Mr. Ronson's voice reading the story.
