Nice little story, focused on Ekaterin

Ekaterin is a much stronger character than she may seem, and this little story emphasizes that. Grover Gardner is once again the voice of the Vorkosigan books. So very glad to get another story, however small; Ms Bujold always delivers more complexity than you find at first.

I've been a fan of Mary Stewart for several decades, read all her books back in the 70s, and re-read them a couple of times after that. I bought this for the nostalgia, and initially wasn't sure I'd like this. But it's entirely a good, old-school romantic thriller, and the narrator's voice soon becomes *just right* for the story.

I really like Cornelius Garrett's narration. Except - the Dowager Lady St Erth! Oh, my poor ears! In print, her monologues are difficult enough; in Mr Garrett's narration - while probably the right sort of penetrating, droning, upper-register voice for the part - she hurts my ears (it's a personal hearing issue). Too bad someone can't convince her to be quiet, just once - but that's not in Ms. Heyer's story.

Otherwise, Mr Garrett seems to have just the right sort of voices for the characters: Gervaise St Erth, the newly-arrived heir, is quiet, mannerly, patient; Martin (the spoiled 2nd son who thought he'd inherit) is young, resentful, ready to take offense. Even the other women's voices are well done; Drusilla is understated but competent, Marianne Bolderwood is young, eager, but with a sense of good manners over all.

I wish Mr Garrett had narrated even more of Ms Heyer's books. This has to be my favorite - he gets the voices so very right. Nicky is an impetuous young man, Lord Carlyon is so calm, so proper, until he isn't. And the a-bit-over-the-top lisp of Francis Cheviot is just right, to show him as nothing more than a dandy, at least at first.

A treat to hear Ian Carmichael narrate

This isn't my favorite of the Lord Peter Wimsey novels, but I enjoy listening to Ian Carmichael narrating, since he played Lord Peter for the BBC series. It's nearly an undiscovered murder, but Lord Peter gets curious and begins finding little cracks in the story. Miss Climpson has a really good role in this, being the chatty and inquisitive spinster lady, and then goes boldly into some danger.

Another good story; narration a bit slow-paced?

I read the book the day it was released in February, but just finished listening to the audio version. I didn't see the plot twist coming at the end, though something early on - can't say what - gave me a clue about who the serial rapist was. I liked the continuation of the 'kinder, gentler Eve" that I've noticed in the last couple of books; she seems to be getting used to the idea of Roarke feeding her detectives or accepting a couple of doughnuts from a witness, even if she does keep putting her face into the path of someone's fists.

I had to listen to this at a slightly-accelerated speed (set my Android phone app to 1.25x, then backed off to 1.15x), because it seemed to me that Susan Ericksen's narration was a bit more slowly-paced than usual, and I found it just off-pace enough to be annoying.

Good story about Dennis Mira; excellent narration

Susan Ericksen has a wonderful voice for Dennis Mira, who has been a charming character in tiny parts for so many books. In this story centered on his cousin, we get a much better look at Dennis. There is one scene with Dennis and Eve that nearly had me in tears, it was so well-written and well-narrated.

This would be a good entree to the series for a person who hasn't read earlier books.

I was pleasantly surprised by the author's narration in this short story. While she isn't a professional narrator, she does a very decent job of it. (I've heard professional narrators do a worse job, though not in this series.) As with other stories in this series, it does quickly draw you in and keep you interested, but you do need to pay attention.

Not quite 4 stars, though Banner is a very nice new character, and the squick factor is less than might be expected. Some great lines for Peabody, near the end; and there's a side to Baxter we haven't seen before.

The narrator reads very slowly, but I eventually got more-or-less used to the speed. Didn't try to transfer to my Kindle Fire, so as to have a speed adjustment. May try in future.

I do like this series, and this story. There's not a lot of action in the Lakeside(?) community, unlike Written in Red. But there are significant events.
