Fantastic story and fabulous narrator!

Just a lovely story for our time! Couldn’t put it down. Characters are rich and the narrator does such a good job of bringing them to life.

Intriguing and an important read

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was blown away with her story and the interweaving of her personal trauma with her role as a private investigator on this explosive Title IX case.

Blown away …

This touched my heart in a way that very few books ever have … the characters are unforgettable and the author richly provided an emotional narrative that was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Black Cake gets to the root of all families … the secrets, the hurt, anger, regret as well as the love, the devotion and grace - the consequences of our choices and how they can affect future generations. The narration was superb/outstanding. I loved the ending … doesn't leave you hanging, and yet I still wanted more .... Bravo!

Such a good, surprising read!

Read this a month ago and am still thinking about it. Great characters, rich story, and a fabulous narrator! Had no idea what to expect when I began reading and finished the book in 2 days, so goo!

Delightful

I had no idea what to expect but was overwhelmed by how fabulous it was. Loved all the characters; the narrator was phenomenal, and the story .... rich and insightful look behind the scenes of church life told with love and humor.

I LOVED her first two books, and have been waiting for the 3rd installment, but this just fell flat for me, drawn-out and her "case" went in a very interesting direction, but it felt all over the place and didn't have the texture and depth the other two books had. The ending was a total surprise which helped, but didn't (for me) make up for the lackluster story.

Outstanding

I was not prepared to love this book as much as I did ... wept the last 45 mins of the book it was that heartfelt and epic -- I even listened to the credits, which are a must! If you like books with strong female characters, relationships and family, run don't walk. The narration was stellar, this book was a fantastic way to end 2021!

Great story, wonderful characters and the narration was superb!! Lots of stress in my life right now, and this book was the perfect escape. If you love historical fiction, strong female roles this book is for you

Disappointing

I had such high hopes as the book was listed on a popular blogger's TBR for Summer 2021 list. For me, the story fell way short ... it was so long, too many characters that were hard to track and the sing-song/lullaby style of the narrator was tiresome and made the story that much more difficult to enjoy. Even though I struggled with the story, the narrator and almost quit a few times, I am glad I plowed thru as the ending ties up nicely, but whew ... getting there for me was a chore and glad it is over!

Read this in less than a day - such a provocative, timely story that was not what I expected and was so much more. Fabulous narration as well! Highly recommend.
