It took me a bit to "get into" this book, and at one point I was ready to quit, but then I got hooked on the story - and it is a great story, and now I can't wait to listen to this book again! Kate Reading is one of my favorite narrators.

The story of the little pauper who dared ask for "more" gruel, told in Dickens matchless prose, full of dry British wit, and narrated by one of the best: Simon Vance. Recommend as a summer listen, or fall or winter or spring!

A beautifully constructed story told with rich vocabulary embedded with dry British humor, brought more to life with the excellent narration. The kind of book that can have a lasting impact on your life. How I wish I had read it in high school when I was supposed to have!!

Richard E. Grant narrated this book wonderfully. After just a few minutes I looked up all the other books that he narrated, since he had, in that short time, become a favorite. But technically speaking, this was the worst audible.com book I have ever had: "End of CD 3," "Beginning of CD 4," no break whatsoever between the last word of a chapeter and the announcement of the next chapter, almost as if they were one word. "Swordchapter 3" or "novelschapter 7' and so forth. Still, for all that I will probably listen again. It's a memorable story, I like to fall asleep to a book, and Richard E. Grant is a perfect narrator to read you to sleep like a kind and trustworthy uncle.

A stunning work of historical fiction, good character development、An epic story. It just didn't kick in with me, so to speak, until abt. p. 400 or so. I kept sloughing through because I've not yet read a Michener book that wasn't worth it, and I'm glad I finished this one.
