Excellent series
Revisado: 11-05-24
This has been one of my favorite series!
I loved how the author used scripture and other historical accounts to create the different characters. It challenges my own trust and faith in God. It has encouraged me to help my own children to fall in love with the stories of the Bible.

Beautiful story!
Revisado: 08-22-24
I’ve recently listened to several of Tessa Afshar’s books. This may be my favorite?
Highly recommend this book.
I appreciate how she makes history come to life and makes me want to learn more .
The characters are complex and enjoyable.
I especially loved the discussions on relationship with God through the perspective of a Jewish woman of that era.
It helps me to better visualize scripture.

I was uncertain if I’d enjoy this spin on the story of Esther.
I thought I might find the story boring since knowing the real story. However, the author brought new concepts and ideas. It was creative and I had a hard time putting it down.
I was also concerned that the sensuality would go too far like other “Christian” fiction books, but I think the author did a fantastic job! She bypassed unnecessary details, but included what was needed for the story to flow.
I’m excited to recommend this book to others! Regardless of one’s faith, this would be a good book.

I loved hearing how God worked in this man’s life. Such an incredible story. It was well written and the narrator did a great job. I wish that there had been more details though. Many huge life events were told very quickly.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Well written and well told
Revisado: 10-26-23
After Jinger Vuolo’s book and watching Happy Shiney People I was very curious to listen to this as well.
Firstly, it was very well written and Jill did a fantastic job narrating.
Jill had a very different story to tell than Jinger.
I was saddened to hear all that they had gone through with finances and her parents.
I would have felt exploited as well.
It was good to give a more full picture.
I appreciate her acknowledgment that there can be a big mix of both good and bad without lessening the beauty and hurt of the other.
I really wonder how her parents have felt about the book and how it has impacted their relationship.
I’m curious why they released the book now instead of giving their relationship more time to heal.
She gave a lot of insight on what it has been like to be a public figure and it’s impact.
Jill is a strong woman who isn’t afraid to step out. I’m not sure I would have done the same.
I wish she had shared more about her personal faith.
I could ask her a ton more questions, but it was definitely a great book to listen to.

She had no choice in the matter - none of the girls did. Her mission was to give birth to and raise many children in devoted service to a shared husband. Susan was 15 years old when she became the sixth wife of Verlan LeBaron, one of the leaders of a rogue Mormon cult, who was engaged in a blood feud with his brother that from 1972 to 1988 claimed up to two dozen lives. In this gripping and eloquent book, Susan Ray Schmidt tells the story of growing up on the inside and of her ultimate escape with her children from an oppressive and violent life.

Well written and captivating
Revisado: 09-21-23
I love how she dug into the thoughts and feelings of the moment during the story. She didn’t give much foreshadowing. She wanted to view her story through the moment it happened rather than looking back.
We typically develop a new lens of our lives which alters our perception.
It grows compassion to both the 15 year old bride and 40 year old groom.
That’s hard to swallow, but she painted a beautiful picture to gain understanding.
She’s says they were all victim to the ideology.
It challenged my views and encouraged my faith in God.

Mixed views
Revisado: 01-04-23
I felt that the author did a good job in trying to acknowledge different views and make things personable.
He did use the Bible and had a “bottom line” truth while also recognizing the significance and importance of grace.
However, I felt that there was much more leaning towards Christian culture or world culture than scripture.
It’s good to examine the views of culture and Christian culture, but it wasn’t dripping in Biblical truth.
It felt like there were boxes of what the Bible says, boxes of church logistics, and then the box of the world.
At the same time he brought up many good thoughts and discussions.
I think the book was a good read for a mature Christian, but I don’t know that I will recommend it? On the other side, there aren’t many books like this so I do really appreciate it!

Therese Wolley is a mother who has made a promise. She works as a secretary, shops for groceries on Saturdays, and takes care of her two girls. She doesn’t dwell on the fact that her girls are fatherless, mostly because her own father abandoned her before she was born and she has done just fine without him. Even though her older daughter regularly wakes with nightmares and her younger one whispers letters under her breath, she doesn't shift from her resolve that everything will be fine.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 11-03-22
The story line was a little interesting, but the majority of the book was slow. There were also a lot of loose ends that went unanswered. It felt like it was written slowly and then there was a deadline that needed to be met so it wrapped up really quickly.
There were interesting parts, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I found this really interesting, especially hearing it from the perspective in the UK.
I’d love to chat about this with the nurses in the US.
It’s interesting hearing similarities and differences to the US.
Having given birth 4x in the US, I was surprised by some of the differences. In my first delivery I would have given my right arm for just a drink of water, let alone a snack! My husband wouldn’t even sneak me a sip cause those are the rules. They use aromatherapy, lights, pools and sounds too?!?
