Historia
It starts with the dogs. They won’t stop barking. And then the earth shrugs - 8.9 on the Richter scale. It’s the world’s biggest earthquake since Lisbon in 1755, and it doesn’t hit California or Japan or Mexico, but New Madrid, Missouri, a sleepy town on the Mississippi River. Seismologists had predicted the scope of the disaster - but no one listened. For hundreds of miles around, dams burst, engulfing entire counties in tidal waves of mud and debris. Within minutes, there is nothing but chaos and ruin from St. Louis to Vicksburg, from Kansas City to Louisville.

the letters at the beginning of chapters were great. The disaster response was accurate. Hated the religious cult subplot. 2nd read. still enjoyable

Historia
October 8, 1918: Amid the last of the Allies' attempts to defeat the Germans, Sgt. Alvin York of Tennessee found himself and his platoon of only 17 men trapped in the thick of heavy machine gun fire. Rather than retreating or calling upon the artillery to take out the nest, York single-handedly took out 25 Germans, dropping them one by one, and captured many more. This is one of the many tales of York's famed heroism, which were heralded as some of the most impressive battle stories in the history of modern warfare. Sergeant York contains the legendary soldier's war diaries.

Great Story, Reader
Revisado: 01-27-24
The story of Alvin York is fascinating and inspiring. The book is a transcript of interviews with York and military records. The interviews were transcribed in Yorks Tennessee Hill country vernacular. The recording though, is read by a voice actor who does not use a Tennessee accent. It makes York's voice sound more like he's stupid rather than authentic. And he definitely was NOT stupid. Probably would have been better to read this one instead of listening. It's really annoying.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Historia
Anything that alienates and divides us leaves us weak and exposed to disaster. Simple human compassion is more essential to our national resilience and strength than most of us recognize. Shallow values won’t suffice as the foundation of our social and cultural infrastructure. With anecdotes and unexpected stories about growing up during the '60s and '70s in Los Angeles and from her work in disaster recovery, Diane Burden Cox illustrates the importance of our relationships with each other to our national resilience.

interesting
Revisado: 12-28-18
This was a very interesting and informative book. It's also damn scary. According to this we have an incompetent, lying bully attempting to lead the world, just like Hitler. (He has singled out ethnic groups and is currently putting them into concentration camps along the southern border.) Woodward did a great job of documentation.

This was an excellent review of the search for the 1918 influenza virus, read by the author. It includes understandable descriptions of how viruses work and details the discoveries and work of researchers who tracked down and sequenced the flu genes. I loved it.

Mark Taylor discovers first hand that no good deed goes unpunished when the old camera he found during a freelance job in an Afghanistan bazaar gives him more than great photos. It triggers dreams of disasters. Tragedies that happen exactly as he envisions them. He learns that not only can he see the future, he can change it. Then the unthinkable happened and everyone ignored his frantic warnings. Thousands die. Suddenly, the Feds are pounding on his door and the name they have for Taylor isn't urban hero. It's enemy combatant.

Original and Well Written
Revisado: 04-21-18
This is a well written book with an original plot and great character development. I listened to this book from Audible and enjoyed it thoroughly. Who was it who said Science fiction is just like any other writing except you change one law of nature? I don't remember, but this, although not really science fiction, fits that description. Can't wait for the next chapter!
