A good introduction to St Ignatius
Revisado: 03-06-25
I’ve never gotten through all 14 rules until this book. I think its application to my married life was the biggest draw. I’m glad I listened. I also have a paperback copy, which I’m sure we will revisit together. I would definitely recommend to a married couple to read it together. Father Gallagher is an experienced spiritual guide.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Good story…would he be his own hero?
Revisado: 12-21-24
I liked Mr Vance’s voice and his candid story-telling. (There are tons of explicatives if that bothers you.) there’s no silver bullet to the problems that plague poor hillbillies, blacks, Hispanics, or any other minority. Our society is not trending in the right direction to get anything back on track. However, I wonder if Mr Vance would consider himself a role-model? He is quick to acknowledge so much that went right in his life to help him avoid the fate of so many of his “people”, but would he look up to himself? Do young Appalachian men look up to him now? For the right reasons? I’m not knowledgeable enough to know those answers.
(I’m making no comment on the man as our VP-elect. I didn’t vote for him or his main competitor, and I don’t know a ton about him since the date of this book.)

Waaaay better than the movie!
Revisado: 08-11-24
Read this if you liked the movie, it’s so much better. There’s much better dialogue to go with the action, and the action is so much better than the movie. (Of course the movie has butchered the story, it’s Spielberg after all; but if Mr Crichton approved it then who am I to judge?) The narrator is great.
(I’ve listened to dozens of audiobooks.)

Fun book
Revisado: 02-08-24
It’s an interesting premise, and I want to know how the conflicts progress through the rest of the series. It’s well-written, too, even if I always have a hard time believing in the maturity of the teenagers in these kinds of books. I’ve listened to a lot of audiobooks, and this reader was too slow. I almost always listen at 1x speed, but I had no issue listening to this recording at 1.2x. Otherwise, he was fine.
