A worthy sequel

This was a wonderful sequel. The places she chooses are personally for me wonderful, happy memories. Ren was an intriguing new character and I enjoyed how there were so many ways this book connected to the storm runner. The god of death was a pleasant surprise and you get to see other characters from the first book. I would want to know more about how the Mixtecas differ from the Maya. Always proud of reading about NM and love how Cervantes builds on meso-American culture. The ending could have been more but can’t wait for the next book. A real pleasure and my 12 year old son loved it. It’s our family read and we enjoyed the storytelling.

The second book was exceptional. I still liked the first book better but what I liked the most was the multi dimensionality of each character. There were so many jarring and harrowing adventures in the story. Not to mention the constant plot twists. I kind of wanted a little more closure but can’t wait to see how it all wraps up. Beautiful job done by the narrator. She really knows how to make the characters come alive. Again, I love the homage to spirits and ancestors as well as the connections to Indigenous knowledge. A great text for the classroom.
