Historia
Beginning where Luis Alberto Urrea's bestselling The Hummingbird's Daughter left off, Queen of America finds young Teresita Urrea, beloved healer and "Saint of Cabora," with her father in 1892 Arizona. But, besieged by pilgrims in desperate need of her healing powers, and pursued by assassins, she has no choice but to flee the borderlands and embark on an extraordinary journey into the heart of turn-of-the-century America.

One of my favorite audibles ever
Revisado: 06-14-22
Both this and the Hummingbird’s Daughter. The prose is wonderfully descriptive, it is like a radio play where you can imagine everything. Such a unique story that weaves in both Mexican and US history of the turn of the century. The author’s voice draws you in and has a calming effect. I love the magical realism aspects and the wonderful characters.

Historia
Sabahat, a beautiful young Muslim woman, is known in her family for her intelligence, drive, and stubbornness. She believes there is more in store for her life than a good marriage and convinces her parents to let her pursue her education, rare for young Turkish women in the 1920s. But no one - least of all Sabahat herself - expects that in the course of her studies she will fall for a handsome Armenian student named Aram.

Need to google characters or get written book
Revisado: 01-12-20
Well-performed, engaging story. However, as an American with little exposure to Turkish names, it was very hard to follow at first. I picked it up and stopped various times, until I finally powered through enough to get the gist of who was who. There’s A LOT of characters. Silly me, about 60% of the way through the book I realized I also had the written kindle version. It has two very helpful diagrams of two of the three families involved. Sadly, it does not have one for Aram’s family. So today I went back and read several of the first chapters I had listened to, when it had been so confusing. It all became a lot clearer. Anyhow, the narration has just enough emotion to keep it engaging without going overboard. It was interesting to learn about this chaotic and important period in Turkish history. In fact, I had family who left Turkey right around the time period this novel started so it was particularly intriguing for me. I also liked the end where Ms Kulin speaks a bit about what happens to the characters, all her real life relatives, after the book ends

Well worth the time
Revisado: 02-16-19
I was very engaged in Michelle’s story and what her general observations about the world and politics. I loved that it is in her voice. By the end, I felt as if we were close friends. Spoiler alert — she stares emphatically at the very end that she is NOT running for office ever. This makes sense given all that she has said throughout the book, participant her views on partisanship and politics. Nonetheless I am certain she will continue to make a positive difference in people’s lives, particularly young women and girls of color, in whatever she chooses to do next. More power to you, Mrs Michelle Robinson Obama !

Possibly the best book I have ever listened to via audible.
Revisado: 05-01-18
The story was a little hard to understand at first as I wasn’t following who was on what side. I jumped to the book and read the first couple of chapters (after listening) and it all started to make sense. Perhaps if I’d read a bit about the book first, this would have been clearer. The protagonist is a communist secret agent working with the South Vietnamese secret police (the US allies) and it begins around the fall is Saigon. The agent then goes to the US, and the story continues there. I won’t say much more as I don’t
want to give away too much.
The story was spell binding, the prose so engaging and the the commentary insightful.
I enjoyed the narrator’s slight accent which allowed me to hear and feel the story through the protagonist’s mind, but it was also very clear and easy to follow.
I RARELY have given a book or audiobook a 5, but the writing, story and narration here were so intelligent and captivating, it won me over.
