Historia
The wickedest, most wonderful science fiction story ever created in our - or any - time. Anything can begin at a party in California - and everything does in this bold masterwork by a grand master of science fiction. When four supremely sensual and unspeakably cerebral humans - two male, two female - find themselves under attack from aliens who want their awesome quantum breakthrough, they take to the skies - and zoom into the cosmos on a rocket roller-coaster ride of adventure, danger, ecstasy, and peril.

The worst of Heinlein?
Revisado: 04-09-25
This book was so abominably bad. It commits many sins, but the most frequent and egregious is its lack of point. The protagonists never really solve the mystery of who was trying to kill them and they wander about the universe talking about engineering and tits in equal measure. I have enjoyed many of Heinlein’s books but this was like something written as pastiche without point. Snappy dialogue without significance. Polemics without purpose.
It should only be read if you’re trying to confirm my insult but I tell you three times- eschew this poison tart

Historia
Mo's latest assignment is assisting the police in containing an unusual outbreak: ordinary citizens suddenly imbued with extraordinary abilities of the superpowered kind. Unfortunately these people prefer playing superpranks instead of superheroics. The mayor of London being levitated by a dumpy man in Trafalgar Square would normally be a source of shared amusement for Mo and Bob, but they're currently separated because something's come between them - something evil.

a tough listen for fans of Bob
Revisado: 10-08-24
This is hardly fair to the author but he wrote a very engaging story that undermines pretty much every assumption about Mo, the wife of Laundry operative Bob Howard. Here we get a chance to see the internal life of the woman who has been Bob's partner but we don't get into her head until she's been burned out by a decade of wet work and indignities in the service of slowing the coming Lovectaftian apocalypse. Instead of her being a lovable hero like Bob saw her, we find she's already fed up with everything and turns on Bob for what seems trivial and possibly not even real reasons. Plot device to make it her book? No idea, but since the book starts out with her and Bob breaking up into a trial separation she comes to the ear automatically disappointing to fans of Bob... and never claws her way into likeableness.
Also, Stross does a lot of parodic - but usually not THAT funny - riffs on genre, this is his MCU/DCU comics version and it didn't work well. Wasn't funny, wasn't thrilling, and sadly it seems that every Super is going to die hideously unless Stross mitigates that down the line.
The audiobook is a solid performance and if you started with this one maybe you'd find it easier to like the protagonist but for series readers it's like having two married friends break up and now you have to listen to the one you don't know that well complain for hours about the one you love.

Historia
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
In the early 1990s, Motorola, the legendary American technology company, developed a revolutionary satellite system called Iridium that promised to be its crowning achievement. Light-years ahead of anything previously put into space, and built on technology developed for Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars", Iridium's constellation of 66 satellites in polar orbit meant that no matter where you were on Earth, at least one satellite was always overhead, and you could call Tibet from Fiji without a delay and without your call ever touching a wire.

not quite what I expected
Revisado: 05-08-24
This was all a bit perplexing. I agree that something like a religion is emerging in UFOlogy but it's always been a field with religious ties. From Adamski to Applewhite to Rael and on and on. There might not be a cult leader in the Bigelowverse but the cadre of media figures and influemcers trying to get clout from Pentagon affiliation can't get enough oxygen into the field to make it catch fire. people looking for aliens won't find them here - at least not ETs. And the thoughts. about LLM/machine learning feel misguided and likely to cloud an already murky conversation between tech experts who want to develop the underlying systems, and loons who will find a god in thr machine.

Historia
This audiobook collects Wellman’s John Thunstone and Lee Corbet stories, written between 1943 and 1979. These stories combine the mystical and horrific with traditional Southern folk tales and legends. These stories also reveal a post-World War II modernism that make them much more then pulp romanticism. The paranoia and cynicism of modern weird icons, such as The X-files, may well have had their genesis in the pulp musings of Manly Wade Wellman.

These are fun paranormal battles with the most basic Good vs Evil setup. I really enjoyed them and wish there were more but Wellman’s extensive other writings will have to do. These are well performed and solid candlelight clasics.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Loved this romp into fantasy from the horror master. I remember mostly enjoying Eye of the Dragon but this was more fun and will be well remembered. The plot does a good job of making you think it’s never going to get to the fantasy - but patience is rewarded.

Historia
A razor-sharp thinker offers a new understanding of our post-truth world and explains the American instinct to believe in make-believe, from the Pilgrims to P. T. Barnum to Disneyland to zealots of every stripe...to Donald Trump. In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen demonstrates that what's happening in our country today - this strange, post-factual, "fake news" moment we're all living through - is not something entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path.

This book really does take a long view at the decline of evidence-based thinking as a cultural currency in the US, but it is quite depressing to relive the ride.
