a telling boomer piece
Revisado: 01-20-25
today I learned that boomers were discriminating against veterans. that's not what the book says, this just feels like boomers telling in themselves. the author makes the case for why veterans are ideal employees. the whole thing looks like another pseudo intellectual trying to control the narrative.
a not negligible amount of the book is spent making it sound like an appeal to traditional values and romanticizing the discipline taught in boot camps.
I probably wouldn't even notice if the author wasn't so tone deaf to the job market Americans face when he compares old vs. young recruiters.
this is the kind of book I'd recommend to a problematic aunt so that she can learn some entry level modern statistics & learn a little bit about the world / hopefully use this "safe" addition to her frame of reference to start questioning some of the more unsubstantiated shit she'd normally say.
while touching; a whole back half of this think piece is just an anecdotal story about the resilience of our soldiers.

The Baron Sherazad sent me as far away from Eslant as possible. Now, I’m stuck in the middle of nowhere, in a nest full of enemies, with only a demented mimic and a renegade elf to watch my back.

A tragic interlude, reflective of the third installment of any trilogy
Revisado: 04-16-24
They're building up to Damon becoming more monstrous, but his being a monstrosity doesn't have amy noteworthy consequences; its mostly just too cute.
right? they do a good job ramping the stakes up for a sequel, but I rather would have seen a situation where Damon breaks Melina's trust in a key way that set's up a lot of shame as the plot resolves followed by a monster-coming-to-terms- with-his-monstrosity (like hellboy or swamp thing in the third book.
if this is the empire of the series or the Darkest hours of a larger story, then maybe I didn't need the happy ending.

Historia
Ramesses II ruled the Nile Valley and the wider Egyptian empire from 1279 to 1213 B.C., one of the longest reigns in pharaonic history. He was a cultural innovator, a relentless self-promoter, and an astute diplomat—the peace treaty signed after the Battle of Kadesh was the first in recorded history. He outbuilt every other Egyptian pharaoh, leaving behind the temples of Abu Simbel; the great hypostyle hall of Karnak; the tomb for his wife Nefertari; and his own memorial, the Ramesseum.

Great stuff. Minimal notes.

I wish they'd make a space to talk more about the politics preceding Ramses. Like, this is a great lesson in authoritarianism and what it looks like; but a separate audiobook talks about this politically motivated assassination of Tut, so I wish I saw how we went from The Cult of Amun's reaction to Atek's revision, & how that assassination benefited Tut's following Pharoahs into the 19th Dynasty... I feel like there's a cultural movement there I'm missing.

Historia
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

It's bad.
Revisado: 02-07-23
The first chapter sells itself as a thriller. It's not a mystery, it's a romance.
The world building collapses in on itself such that the entire setting revolves around the main character. I would have been way happier with a smaller story with less stakes, not knowing exactly what a soulless character is.
The romance is gross. The love interest is a werewolf, and they can do all sorts of shape changes on purpose, but also by habit and accident depending on what the scene needs. so... during the make out scene in the middle of the book, all I could do was picture a tounge like a great dane and gag in the middle of the office.

Historia
Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell's revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In this book, Campbell outlines the Hero's Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

be ready for psychoanalysm
Revisado: 12-29-22
they used Freudian models for psychology appropriately, but I definitely didn't expect it. just be prepared for that.
it helps to have a strong background in mythology before you read this. The author tries to teach you mythology and psychology in symbols at the same time, and you're better off having a well rounded background in mythology before going through this. if I didn't enjoy mythology, then I know I would have been absurdly lost.
