A thriller on the high seas
Revisado: 06-18-23
I listened to Varuna to pass the time on a road trip so had the luxury of no interruptions to the story. The narrator did a great job of distinguishing the male and female characters and he has an easy voice to listen to. I enjoyed the many layers of interest - foreign places and cultures, diving (I am not a diver), ecology and world issues like narcotics plus I now need to investigate Komodo dragons. The personal relationships between characters, their motives and ambitions were revealed throughout the book. The violence of the drug lord was described in enough detail to make it real without being overpowering which makes it a good read/listen for people like me.

Powerful human story
Revisado: 10-28-19
This production was made all the more touching by listening to the individual stories in such a tragic family history. Well done Danny Ben-Moshe for providing a channel of healing for so many generations of your family and allowing listeners a window into your world.

Historia
In this riveting landmark autobiography, which reads like a novel, Academy Award and Emmy winner Louis Gossett, Jr., masterfully transports us to 1840s New York; Washington, D.C.; and Louisiana to experience the kidnapping and 12 years of bondage of Solomon Northup, a free man of color. Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, was an immediate bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War.

'Not for me' but an outstanding narration
Revisado: 09-19-19
I never chose to watch the movie version of this story because I cannot bear to watch violence. I don't know why I thought the book would be different so this review is for a book I never finished. However, the narration of the chapters I got through is outstanding. So much of Solomon's character comes to life by listening to Louis Gossett Jr.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

I loved this book!
Revisado: 05-03-19
This book captivated me from the beginning. The majesty of nature in the stark setting of topics like family breakdown and abandonment, racial and class tension, human strength and survival. The marshland of North Carolina is brought to life through this beautifully narrated novel. I think Marsh Girl could become a modern literary heroine.
