As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. Very informative book. I think women struggling with manipulative and controlling mothers will find that this book will help them to look at their situation in new ways and recover from emotional and psychological abuse.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 11-13-11
This audiobook was a pleasant surprised. I enjoyed the quality of the writing and the performance of the narrator. I thought this book would be like other relationship books, but this is so much more. Think of it more like social commentary on the foundation of the black family. This book is definitely a conversation worth having!

Historia
Venus Johnston has a great job and a long-term, live-in boyfriend who happens to be a drop-dead gorgeous doctor. She also has a weekly beauty-parlor date to keep her long, nappy hair slick and straight. But the tedious hours and harsh chemicals in the salon have long grated on Venus. One frustrating day, she trades in the long hair for a dramatically short, natural cut and sends her commitment-balking boyfriend packing. It's a bold declaration of independence and one that has effects she never could have imagined.

Delores Phillips' heart-rending debut novel is set in 1950s Georgia where most of Rozelle Quinn's 10 children can pass as white. But Rozelle thinks it's time for 13-year-old Tangy Mae to follow in her own footsteps and earn money "cleaning for whites" and bedding men at the "Farmhouse."

One of the best audiobooks I've listened to.... This was a truly remarkable story as well as narration. I had to read it twice. The characters and the plot was well developed. This is a definite must-read. However, be prepared, this story is very disturbing.

I recently finished this audiobook. The performances where much better than the story, which left much to be desired. Whoever read the part of the first lady was fantastic.
