Historia
As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smell of pine. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb. Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.

Different and Enjoyable
Revisado: 06-03-24
January’s performance was excellent from the aging of Thea’s voice to Bray’s excellent portrayal of a 5yr old. The story blends the magical, romance and humanity into a saga that ebbs and flows like life. The story sucked me in and kept me going. I would love to be adopted by Miss Lucy! Thank you for sharing this world with us Nora!

Hoping the next book steps it up
Revisado: 11-07-23
The world, twist on mythical creatures, and politics are the start of something special in this series. It’s a first person narrative so there is inner monologue.
The main hero is grey, has some complexity, and written fairly well. The heroine is stronger in the second book but less clever and more immature. The narrator is better in the second; the first was very harlequin romance sounding.
The series could be awesome I feel if the story was edited to push the action, intrigue, sexual tension, and tighten the story. The sex scenes seem contrived, the inner monologue repetitive, and the plot loose. I didn’t fall into the world completely yet because things seem confusing. Book 2 was an improvement over book 1 so I’ll continue to book 3.
For me, this is a series best read not listened to; unfortunately, my library doesn’t have it and I haven’t been hooked enough to buy the books.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Rc Bray does an amazing job and truly b brought not just the characters but the whole world to life.
As to the story, I just found this author and series when audible promoted it. While some parts seemed dry or slow the rest of the story was action packed, thoughtful, and what I perceived as realistic. The byplay between Joe and Skippy is fantastic. Skippy’s self discovery is both heartwarming and mysterious but his goofs & fun activities are gold.

Newbie to the series
Revisado: 05-07-23
I love the genre but hadn’t started this series until now. I’ve read the 2 previous books and loved them. They both had different rhythms which matched what the story was exploring. I wished I had started with reading the books first instead of listening so I could get the lingo down.
I loved Book 3 Savage Son and Ray Porter is one of my favorite voice performers!! Book 3’s story rhythm felt similar to book 2’s rhythm though this story is exploring some real-life dark elements. While I was engrossed in the story the topics were difficult and I needed breaks. Other readers have mentioned there were detailed products, businesses and back stories for the other characters; some liked while others didn’t like this part of the story. My feeling is this book’s ending coupled with the other characters details etc are building up to something big. On to Book 4!

Promising but tuned out
Revisado: 03-26-23
I’m glad this was a free Audible book and I found the Dempsey series first! Overall, I think the story has great potential but a poor listen. I am switching to Kindle. There’s a deal for both kindle books~$10. Paperback is cheaper.
1. Good plot, realistic and mind gamey! Reminiscent of Bourne; with Medical research, big pharma, military, government, and shadows. I think the story was set in the 90/00s which brought back some memories.
2. I listened @1.1x because it was really slow for me. I cannot find something positive to say about the narration which is rare. To me it sounded like it was being read to kindergarteners and the character voices we’re all too similar; particularly the females. I haven’t listened to other Ray Childs narration before so I have none of his work to compare to.
3. When listening to the book: between the medical terminology, conversation style, and different parties it was difficult for me to stay in the plot. I zoned out many times making it difficult to feel the action, intrigue, and connect with the characters.
4. At the end, I was hoping I had an understanding of the big picture for the world this story was set in but sadly no.
Like I stated, I will try the Kindle version.

Hallmark 1920s radio show style
Revisado: 03-22-23
Agree with @Krista; this was a Hallmark type script. Light hearted, romcom and I did laugh! I wasn’t sure about the modernized 1920s radio show approach but it was fun. The music between the scenes wasn’t my favorite. The voice acting was great especially with my swoon worthy Shaun’s Essex British accent.

Historia
For the first time in this ancient, bloodstained story, the tournament is breaking. The boundaries between the city of Ilvernath and the arena have fallen. Reporters swarm the historic battlegrounds. A dead boy now lives again. And a new champion has entered the fray, one who seeks to break the curse for good...no matter how many lives are sacrificed in the process. As the curse teeters closer and closer to collapse, the surviving champions each face a choice: dismantle the tournament piece by piece, or fight to the death as this story was always intended.

Wasn’t what I expected
Revisado: 12-16-22
The first book was solid in my opinion with adequate narration. I left a raving in depth review. Unfortunately, the sequel wasn’t what I imagined and didn’t hit the mark for me. I will try other books by the authors though.
It’s still teen angsty (not my preference) like the first but I felt the first had the intrigue, development, urgency, tension, gore for adults to be hooked and balance out the teen angst. The second book was a YA through and through without those more adult parts.
I agree with other reviewers some story parts were confusing, disjointed, rushed; a third book would have been fantastic if the adult aspects were there and the story threads were explored. The character development seemed to stop or the development didn’t follow through. There were missed opportunities; those great threads to be pulled and explored. Those story threads were alluded, referenced, and lightly touched upon such as tournament preparation & backstories, rebels, the mystery behind the curse, the new normal, the family stories which never intersected, the spell society & government, what is a villain, sexuality/relationships, and briony’s magic at the end etc…
One pet peeve was the repeated dialogue throughout the book and the conflicting dialogue within 1-2 sentences.

Dark side of Hunger games with magic weapons
Revisado: 12-06-22
Intrigue, mystery, and hints of romance
Angst,violence, no sex, & paranormal/magical themes
Solid 4 star for the voice actors.
If you are looking for romance, great suspense, Pulitzer Prize writing, intricately woven novel, you won’t get it here but it is a delicious guilty pleasure.
Based on the reviews I thought I wouldn’t like it. While it’s agnsty teen at the core, the dark story’s imagery makes me see the violence, the gore. There are some expected and unexpected twists in the story but I was hooked. A feelings mashup: conflicted, tension, sadness, and hope. No HEA but maybe Book 2 will have one; this story is dark chocolate not the sweet creamy milk chocolate.
I like stories which explore the grey. This story asks “are you a villain if”…you have been raised as one, if you have been taught to respond with villainy, if you have to do villainous things to survive, if you are a bystander, puppet, or enabler to villainous deeds. Book one doesn’t dive deep into the questions rather laying them out like cards to look at if you are interested.
I’ll say I wished I had read the book first; there are many characters to learn but it got easier as the story progressed.
