Story is fantastic, narrator is not.

I wanted to read this book for a book club and this was the only free copy audible had. So because it was free I can’t complain too much, but that being said, this version was not the best. I didn’t love the narrator, and multiple times it would repeat a sentence or a whole paragraph, which was jarring and made the book seem disjointed. So beware the narration.

I liked this book. As someone who loves the Durrells myself (books and movies), I thoroughly enjoyed the slow-paced book set in Corfu. Recomendable if you enjoy something relaxed and detailed.

I started listening to this cause I watched the tv series The Durrells of Corfu, and loved it, but as usual, the book is better.

This narrator did an excellent job with the various accents - Spiro in particular was hilarious - and I found myself instantly transported to the magical island of Corfu.

The story itself is brilliant. A memoir with animal bits sprinkled about; I found myself laughing so hard I cried at various scenes in the book, including the one where a scorpion surprises Larry, and the final dinner scene… if you love memoirs that are slow and sweet; if you love James Herriot, you will also love these books, guaranteed.

As an avid fan of all things Scottish myself, this book was so fun. A story blending together of myths and legend; part murder mystery, part romance, part adventure story, it was a delight to listen to. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun story.

I’ve been devouring the Blandings series the last few months, and they’ve helped my mental health so much! To laugh during these stressful times has been the best thing, and I’m so glad I found this series.
The narrator was excellent. I enjoyed the machinations of Galahad, the bumbling mistakes made by the Ninth Earl of Emsworth, and the bevy of young lovers beset by troubles and far too many aunts. 😁 Definitely get this if your spirits need lifting.

This is the first AC book I’ve read in years that was not a reread for me. It was fun to hear new characters and have an entirely new (to me) plot line from the Queen of Crime.

I gave the story 4 stars. I really enjoyed it, but whether through reading too many Agatha’s, or whether the writing was not as good; I guessed the murderer by the second death. 😅 That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I did feel it was kind of obvious who the killer was.
Still, I highly Rex come down for fans of AC!

I grew up reading the James Herriot books, and later, watching the tv show. Christopher Timothy is forever James in my mind, and his narration is excellent. Cannot recommend highly enough for either plot or narration. A cozy piece of my childhood.

I love these books; the first of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot! The only thing I think is that if you haven’t read these books, the two of them contain very similar plot elements, and might tip off the listener to “whodunnit” a lot sooner than anticipated, since they are paired this way.

But the narrators are excellent, and made listening enjoyable! The plots in and of themselves are fun, and although I’ve read them before, it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of hearing them again!

I love Mary Stewart’s books, and this one is no exception. I did find the narration a bit disconcerting as it seemed she gave pretty much everyone a Scottish accent. 🙁
Or I think that’s what it was supposed to be. Anyways. I’d have liked it better with less “voices,” as it took away from my enjoyment of the story.

Loved one; the other too quiet

I loved the Emilia Fox audiobook, but I found the Joan Hickson book to be very quiet and hard for me to understand if there was background noise going one. When I used it in my car, I had to turn up the volume so much that my car speakers sounded fuzzy, before I could hear her. Otherwise would have given 5 stars for all. Don’t mind listening to Joan - she reads well - but she’s just too quiet.
