They pretend to love movies
Revisado: 06-29-23
I completely understand that this is an opinion book. So judging the book itself for having opinions different than mine May not be fair. But it was more than that for me. Their opinions are those that I find dreadful, bullish and uber pretentious. I get it, they like the movies they like. Fine. But they often tore down other movies in order to “praise” the movie they felt “should’ve won”. This is a good premise for a podcast. But listening to this for 7+ hours was very difficult. They come off as pretentious jerks that claim they “love movies” but what they mean is “only the movies we deem worthy.”

Historia
In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

Fascinating and wonderful
Revisado: 04-30-23
Absolutely wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of the Academy and all the petty and absurdly strange feuds. I found myself stopping the book to go watch the movies that I had previously not watched. Such a great book. Only critiqué would be that the book ended kind of abruptly. Would’ve liked more of an editorial about the system itself. But still a fantastic book.

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 03-16-23
I absolutely loved this book. It is easily the fastest I’ve ever read, eh, listened, thru a book. Quentin’s love for cinema and movies is absurdly infectious. I found myself taking notes of movies he mentions that I hadn’t seen so that I could go and watch them. Even found myself pausing the book to go watch some before continuing the book. His mind is quite remarkable and I throughly hope he continues to write more of these. I have even ordered my hard copy version of the book so that I can go back and actually read it the way he intended me to do so. This book is magic. Might be the book that “gave me permission” to be an author (that’s a tip of the hat to a line within this book). Thanks Mr. Tarantino.
P.S I had to take one star off of the “performance” since the narrator for 95% of the book isn’t Quintin. The narrator did a fine job, but let’s be real, you buy a QT audio book to hear QT narrate it. What’s worse is that he t ases you (the listener) with reading the first chapter so you know exactly how great he is at it. Only to be let down the rest of the way. But I get it, the man is busy. He’s a fricken legend. He’s earned the right not to narrate if he doesn’t want to.

Good. Not great.

Love ET. His words are inspirational and I’ve followed him for years. This book is really good. His reading of it is just ok. I wish he would’ve gone a bit off script sometimes. It just felt as if he was being held by the very words he wrote. He’d ready the words when I wish he would’ve “said the words”. If that makes sense.

Heart warming
Revisado: 10-29-22
As a fan of the Howard brothers for their work on the big and small screens, I bought this book to hear about their careers. About growing up on the sets of Big Ben and the Andy Griffith Show etc. This book gave plenty of that. But more importantly, it gave an amazing and beautiful love letter to their parents. They let us in some immensely personal and private stories that weren’t always rose colored. And doing so only showcased the love for their family even more. I laughed, I cried and laughed some more. I also have added many of their early projects to my watch list. Thank you to the Howards. Beautiful book.
