Historia
Join the Army and See the Universe. That is the motto of The Third Space War, also known as The First Interstellar War, but most commonly as The Bug War. In one of Robert Heinlein's most controversial best sellers, a recruit of the future goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe - and into battle with the Terrain Mobile Infantry against mankind's most alarming enemy.

Terrible Narration, Mediocre Story
Revisado: 03-26-24
Why on earth would you get a narrator that can't change voices? Every character sounds exactly the same as the narration and it gets old fast. Aside from that, I thought the story itself was a painfully average slog. As someone who has been through real bootcamp and consumed an inordinate amount of sci-fi bootcamps, there was little here for me to latch on to. The sci-fi element itself seems almost incidental, and takes a back seat so the author can vomit up his personal (and terrible) worldviews through transparent author-surrogate characters. I recomend checking out "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi instead. Don't waste your time with this.

In the hope of taming the Great Rift that divides the galaxy in two, Archmagos Belisarius Cawl invites representatives from across the Imperium to the artificial world of Pontus Avernes. Confident he can convince them of his genius, he must secure their assistance in unlocking the secrets of the pylon network – significant structures built by an ancient race that he believes can stave off the pull of the warp. But among the attendees is an uninvited guest: Fabius Bile himself.

What a Waste
Revisado: 12-05-23
I had been waiting literal years for these two to finally meet, and the payoff is anything but satisfying. Everything happens exactly as you'd expect without any nuance or depth that Haley is definitely capable of. Banks's lack of vocal range is also hilariously apparent when Cawl and Bile start conversing with the exact same voice. As someone who's loved both characters' up to this point, this really did not live up to expectations.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

I was waiting for the self-pity to stop
Revisado: 11-02-23
...then it ended. A neat concept but so overwrought in petty self absorption that it's an absolute chore to get through. After the 11th time she regurgitated the same information I decided to put it on double speed to get through it for my book club. The performance itself is dreadful as the reader can't seem to make the characters and narration sound different enough to tell any of it a part. Dreadful.

Historia
Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Incredible
Revisado: 02-25-22
I've read MANY Black Library books over the years, and never have I seen a book take full advantage of the setting like this. In a sea of brutality and blunt stupidity, this story manages to weave cleverness through every chapter. I can't reccomend it enough.

Fine story, let down by narration
Revisado: 02-09-22
John Banks simply doesn't have the range to deal with multiple "normal" characters. Most of the time Guilliman's voice is inconsistent and the same goes for everyone that isn't sanguinius. The lion and Curze sound too similar which makes it hard to tell who's talking when they chat.

Historia
Ahriman, greatest sorcerer of the Thousand Sons and architect of the Rubric that laid his Legion low, continues to walk the path towards salvation, or damnation. Searching for a cure for his Legion, he is forced to consider - was the great ritual somehow flawed from the very beginning? The answer may lie within the mysterious artefact known as the Athenaeum of Kalimakus, a grimoire of forgotten knowledge that is reputed to contain the exact words of the lost Book of Magnus...or, perhaps, even a transcription of the primarch’s deepest and most secret thoughts.

Revisado: 12-08-21
This was worlds better than the previous book in terms of narration, but the story is difficult to follow and jumps around too much. It really could have benefited from location and time setting before sections.

The Indomitus Crusade has brought the Emperor's vengeance to thousands of star systems. The fleets and armies under the leadership of Roboute Guilliman fight for the survival of humanity against the forces of the Chaos Gods. But the traitors and heretics are not the only foe looking to destroy the rule of Terra. Xenos prey on human worlds in numbers not seen for millennia. Worst amongst them are the rampaging orks, whose migration conquests threaten to reverse the many gains of Fleet Primus.

An actually good book
Revisado: 11-18-21
I was surprised when I saw Gav Thorpe wrote a space wolf book, but it turned out to be an excellent little outing. My main problem is that John Banks can't do space wolves, he doesn't try to give them any accent beyond extra gravely. Otherwise its a fine book for any space wolf fan.
