Smith doesn't lecture, he seeks to understand
Revisado: 11-13-23
Smith comes at the topic of slavery to understand its lasting marks, on the descendants of those enslaved as well as to understand the perspective of the descendants of the enslaved. he has the rare gift of being able to genuinely seek out an understanding of how those with whom he fundamentally disagrees arrived at their position. i have been changed for the better by reading this book.

Historia
Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early 20th century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place", he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious".

You will have to commit to the series...
Revisado: 09-19-22
The story and characters are good and it is an excellent mystery. However, know before you start that you will have to buy the next one as no party of this story is wrapped up or explained by the end of the book.

Historia
Welcome to the summer of 1985 in Philadelphia, when the city was rocked—in almost every sense of the word—by two unprecedented events: Mayor W. Wilson Goode’s May 13 decision to bomb the headquarters of MOVE, a controversial Philadelphia-based radical communal organization, and the July 13 Live Aid concert, where international rock royalty convened in Philly to raise money for victims of the Ethiopian famine. Separated by just two months and eight miles, these events would showcase both the best and the worst of the so-called City of Brotherly Love.

really interesting
Revisado: 08-08-22
such an important historical look. I thought it got a little messy in the second to last and definitely the discussion of MOVE was the most interesting. I want to understand better what it was and how it had evolved.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Really followed, just the right length and a good tale. The narration was spot on. This isn't a game changing book or narration; it is solid storytelling.

Enjoyable story & shows romance as socially aware
Revisado: 05-11-21
I like that the author does a different take on a classic, making it more current. Was not a fan of the narrator who pronounced some of the words incorrectly and bordered on whining way too often. Solid story and well told. The writing isn't anywhere near the level of Austen but the story is.

Desperately seeking an editor
Revisado: 07-25-18
The basic plot is an exciting adventure. But a couple of totally unbelievable plot twists (would such smart people really be duped into ANOTHER trap??) and then way too much of brown lecturing on ancient symbols using the pretense of people lecturing to Langdon. Plus at what should be the end, characters who have been battered, tortured and mutilated choose to have a cozy chat about How The Universe Works so Brown can lecture some more. EDITOR WHERE WERE YOU WHEN WE NEEDED YOU?
