Historia
The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Timothy Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, he does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes.

Incredible tale, well told.
Revisado: 11-08-24
History can teach us so much more when the ordinary lives of ordinary people are included in its telling. For there we find the hope, despair and suffering that is so instructive. This book does an amazing job of placing ordinary people in the center of the story while at the same time telling the broad tale of the high plains in the context of time, geologic, human. It will give you a deeper understanding of those lives as well.as of the extraordinary events that were the American Dust Bowl. Highly recommend.

It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

Beautiful but heartbreaking
Revisado: 10-04-22
This is an incredibly well told story. The point of view is of three different characters who together construct a tragic tale of one familes struggle to survive despite pain and loss, with their own failures compounded by the failure of the "system" which, designed to help, seems to make things worse and to do nothing to prevent a completely preventable tragedy despite intrusive and draconian interventions. The acting is excellent. Highly recommended.

It has been one hundred years since Agatha Christie wrote her first novel and created the formidable Hercule Poirot. A brilliant and award-winning biographer, Laura Thompson now turns her sharp eye to Agatha Christie. Arguably the greatest crime writer in the world, Christie’s books still sell over four million copies each year - more than thirty years after her death - and it shows no signs of slowing.

Brilliant Biography
Revisado: 09-01-22
So uniquely structured with extensive quotes from her work and letters a very loving, literate, narrative and examination of the written work of Agatha Christie. Be patient. By the time you have finished the book you will have a much deeper understanding of Christie and her work than you might have imagined. Well worth the long listen and beautifully read with a perfect French Poirot in addition to other beautifully characterized letters and quotes. A work of art.

Land - whether meadow or mountainside, desert or peat bog, parkland or pasture, suburb or city - is central to our existence. It quite literally underlies and underpins everything. Employing the keen intellect, insatiable curiosity, and narrative verve that are the foundations of his previous bestselling works, Simon Winchester examines what we human beings are doing - and have done - with the billions of acres that together make up the solid surface of our planet.

Brilliant
Revisado: 08-22-22
This man is a genius. And in listening to him read his work, one has a small window of connection to that genius. Reading Land has returned my thoughts to the outside world, the needs of others, the importance of this rock upon which we live our little lives. One is left with a much deeper understanding of how our world got to where it is now, but still manages to offer a tiny ray of hope by being a witness to some of the ways in which people are attempting to remedy the worst consequences of our ignorant, greedy, bungling. It is a fascinating narrative told with intelligence and passion for the subject. Highly recommended.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Amazing
Revisado: 02-17-22
What a wonderful book written with plain simple honesty and clarity of vision in much the same way as its subject both lived his life and wrote his own memoir.
Thoughtfully read in a pleasantly raspy voice.
I wondered about reading a second biography of Grant but found this one to be more than well worth the time and effort. It recreates the time in American history and depicts a man whose life contributed so much to the growth and prosperity, nay even the survival of our nation, with important updates to prior research and new sources that tell us much more about the man and the general, his times, tribulations and triumphs.

Historia
Holding power for over 50 years starting in 1327, Edward III was one of England's most influential kings and one who shaped the course of English history. Revered as one of the country's most illustrious leaders for centuries, he was also a usurper and a warmonger who ordered his uncle beheaded. A brutal man, to be sure, but also a brilliant one.

Wonderful
Revisado: 08-30-21
It took a little while to get used to Mr. Wyndham's style of narration, but not long, and I found it to be just compelling enough to keep my interest but not at all overdone, so I can smile or laugh at irony and humor, cringe at horror and share the sorrow at loss and tragedy and it is my own emotional response to the narrative, no manipulation. I so enjoyed Ian Mortimer's "The Black Prince" that I very impulsively selected Edward III knowing it would be well written. What I did not expect was to have my eyes completely opened (as they were with Black Prince) to a completely new picture of this misunderstood king. How lucky we are to live in a time when historians have taken on a new method of inquiry that gives us a much deeper and more realistic view of the lives of great women amd men of the past. And too that we have authors like Ian Mortimer. His scholarly discipline and rigor, and passion for the subjects of his study are amazing. His beautiful writing allows those of us without an academic background to get a window into the past that is precious and rare. This is a book (as is The Black Prince) that I will be glad to have read to the end of my days!

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Bring your handkerchief
Revisado: 06-09-21
What a beautiful story read perfectly by JK Simmons. I'm almost tempted to read the book to see if it is as touching and powerful with characters as whole and delightful as it feels after hearing the performance.
But I won't because I cannot go through another 6 hours of non-stop crying.
Ove is a fascinating character and we watch as life's viscisitudes-many more than the average amount that afflicts most of us-carch him and throw him around like a helpless rag dpll-yet he cleaves on to what his father taught him and goes forward to Salvation in the form of a woman who loves him exactly as he is.
But then more suffering of epic proportions is heaped upon him-and her-yet somehow they go forward together-i won't say more plot wise it would wreck it for you.
Ultimately, I think, the book is about grief and loss. But along the way we are treated to a glimpse into lives of people who are curious and closed-minded, courageous and cowardly, successful and failures, all the complex elements that make up the human persona-but it is the alchemy of the human connections that bring the very best out in all of them. Which gives meaning to their days and makes their lives meaningful.
But all of this is an undercurrent to what is a wonderful story about wonderful people written in a simple but picturesque prose style. Then yiu have JK SIMMONS who of course is a master and the perfect voice for the story. He reads it with a subtlety that let's the listener have their own feelings abiut what is happening but still has enough expression to keep you engaged. You won't soon forget this book.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Great True Crime Narrative
Revisado: 06-05-21
This was an excellent reporting of the murders committed by serial killer in a small Texas town. However, I somehow believed -either by the description on the book or the introduction that there was going to be an emphasis on how the people in that small.community contributed to the killer getting a light sentence and thus being released and going on to commit 2 more rapes and 3 murders.
Don't get me wrong he did include the names of the different people, what side they were on and the things they said including impact on the plea deal but there wasn't any type of special deep look into those dynamics, which I was expecting.
But over all good true crime.
