Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

A most excellent “literary pop-song”
Revisado: 01-13-24
I love John’s work. you need to listen to the afterward to understand my title, but needless to say, this is a delight. Good action, fun science fiction. easy to hate villain.
I would never want to bother a celebrity, but if I ever had the chance, I would love to be able to tell Will Wheaton that he is a most engaging and delightful narrator, and thank him for the joy and entertainment he has brought me through his work.

imaginative story
Revisado: 01-07-24
To be honest, I tend to prefer hard science fiction. I don’t have a problem with space opera if the world building is well done and fantasy elements are at least self consistent.
Unfortunately, Caretaker suffers from a couple of problems: the emotions are dialed up to 11. not in a bodice shredder way, but every situation is fraught with desperate love, noble restraint, violent hatred and the like.
The first act is actually a well constructed shipboard mystery. However, the second act devolves into an encounter on an alien world with super evil aliens with special powers. Conveniently ,the evil experiments the aliens perform on the protagonists give them special powers too.
If you can overlook these issues, Caretaker is an entertaining listen.

The saga continues
Revisado: 12-28-23
One of the things that TJ does best is illustrate the need for belonging that often LGBT+ people find in our chosen families. each book focuses on a different individual in the pack. This one focused on Robbie, a character I found a little annoying in the first two books, I almost stopped the book when I figured that out. Am I glad I didn’t. Robbie’s story is just as compelling as Ox and Gordo’s. I’m about to go find the next book in the series, though I do have a few I need to read first.

A true delight
Revisado: 11-06-23
I enjoyed the whimsical story and engaging characters. Mr. Scalzi has a delightful imagination and sense of humor. You really engage with his characters.
Will Wheaton brings these characters to life. His narration style is perfect for the dark humor, and often irreverent characters.
I only wish that the author had left the story open for more tails in this delightful world with Hera and Persephone.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Masterful storytelling
Revisado: 12-22-22
Stephen King has been a very prolific author of dark tales. I have read many, but not all. This is one of his best to date.
This would adapt very well to a 6-8 part television series

very trippy in a good way
Revisado: 10-31-22
I quite enjoy Mr Reynolds’s work in general. This book was no exception. It must have been a fun journey for him to write. I cannot say much more without spoilers, so I will just say that the construction of the story was genius. I thought I was in for a much different story than it turned into. Once you realize something unusual is happening, it takes most of the book to ground yourself to reality.

Historia
In 2018, Colton Haynes woke up in a hospital. He’d had two seizures, lost vision in one eye, almost ruptured a kidney, and been put on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Not yet thirty, he knew he had to take stock of his life and make some serious changes if he wanted to see his next birthday. As he worked towards sobriety, Haynes allowed himself to become vulnerable for the first time and discovered profound self-awareness. He had millions of social media followers who constantly told him they loved him.

heart-wrenching
Revisado: 08-29-22
Colton’s memoir is honest, brave, and deeply saddening. A child surrounded by abuse and neglect, Colton tells us the highs and lows of his personal and professional life.
It is engaging, and had me in tears several times.
It sounds like he has turned the corner and at peace with himself. I wish him well.

Celebrating the resilience of children
Revisado: 02-24-22
I decided to re-read this novella when I caught back up to it. The expanse series generally should be read in the order listed on the wiki, though Strange Dogs stands on its own, and could easily be included in an anthology. My only wish is that the story would continue. The latest expanse TV rendering includes this novella in snippets. they did a wonderful job.

In Rip-Off!, 13 of today’s best and most honored writers of speculative fiction face a challenge even they would be hard-pressed to conceive: Pick your favorite opening line from a classic piece of fiction (or even non-fiction) - then use it as the first sentence of an entirely original short story.

An entertaining collection
Revisado: 10-03-21
I was looking for a collection of science fiction short stories, and much of this anthology fit the bill. That said, it was a bit of a mixed bag, with some very excellent sci fi mixed with some really good fantasy. I enjoy both genres, but I am a bit of a purist and found the wildly varying tones a little jumbled. The anthology hung together by its conceit of taking the first line of famous literature and writing a new story with it, but it was hard for me to get into the right listening “mood” as one setting whiplashed into another, even though as individual stories most were quite engaging and entertaining

Revisado: 09-18-20
Joe has become one of my favorite writers. I had been aware of Babylon 5 during its run, but for one reason or another did not watch it. My husband recommended we binge watch the whole series, movies and all. I am hooked. Joe’s story made me sob several times. the arc of Citizen J’Kar is so poignant. So I took a chance and read Joe’s biography. I found myself crying several times. Do yourself a favor and binge B5, and then read Becoming Superman.
