Better than Seraphina
Revisado: 10-05-20
I enjoyed this book more than Seraphina because I found the worldbuilding more intricate, and it was fun to travel from place to place and country to country on a quest for half-dragons. It helped make the story feel more creative and epic. Also, the concept of the saints being half-dragons was an intriguing concept and compelling twist. The narrator did a good job bringing the story to life and was skilled at using different voices for different characters.

C.S. Lewis Tackles a Thorny Theological Issue
Revisado: 09-30-20
C.S. Lewis tackles the thorny theological problem of pain with some interesting philosophy and a healthy dose of humility and wit. I appreciate his thoughts and insights even if I do not agree with them all and some of them may indeed seem a bit dated to a modern audience, but this work certainly made me contemplate spiritual issues and I enjoyed the narration by Simon Vance, who always delivers a strong performance.

Historia
"The Cask of Amontillado" is Edgar Allan Poe's short but enigmatic masterpiece. Set in an unnamed Italian city, we hear the story of how Montresor lures Fortunato through the catacombs into the Montresor family vault and there chains him up and bricks him in for eternity. Why he does it we will never know, but he does so with a casual savagery that is truly chilling.

Butchering of a Classic with Bad Audio
Revisado: 09-30-20
Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is a classic, a masterpiece. Sadly, I must report that this audio version butchers the masterpiece. The sound quality is very uneven and the wrong sounds were chosen to be emphasized. All I really heard were loud footsteps, moaning, coughing, sick sounds, loud music at the beginning, and some manic laughter. The narration itself was always inaudible whispering or indistinct mumbling. This version didn't seem to appreciate that the sound effects weren't my primary interest. The story itself, the narration, was, and the sound effects are meant to be complementary and supplementary to that. I tried listening on three different devices and the audio was terrible across all the devices, so I have to conclude it is just not the audio version for me. Disappointing to hear a classic ruined like this. I'd recommend listening to The Raven or The Tell-Tale Heart. Both have better Audible versions available through Plus membership. At least this was free with my Plus membership.

Sweet Quick Listen
Revisado: 09-12-20
This collection provides a sweet, quick listen. Richard Armitage offers a clear, emotional reading of classic love poetry from such talents as William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I especially enjoyed his reading of Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe. I have listened to this collection twice now and will continue to do so when I want something quick to listen to since it is free with the new Audible Plus catalog, which I think is totally awesome.

Mediocre Writing with Decent Narration
Revisado: 09-12-20
Marc Thompson does a respectable job with the narration and the sound effects are cool as they often are for Star Wars projects, but the writing from Alan Dean Foster is pretty dull and mechanical sounding. I'm not a fan of Alan Dean Foster's writing, I'm afraid. Both the novelizations of The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker are better written, in my humble opinion.

Good Dooku Backstory with Great Voice Acting
Revisado: 09-12-20
This audio drama provides a compelling backstory for Dooku that was underdeveloped and explored in the movies themselves. The sound effects were good and the voice acting was excellent. I especially appreciated the talents of those who voice acted Yoda and Qui-Gon. Yoda sounded just like himself from the movies, and the accent for Qui-Gon was awesome. I hope New Canon undertakes more projects like this one.

Perfect Quick and Haunting Listen
Revisado: 09-12-20
This reading of the Tell-Tale Heart is perfect for a quick and haunting listen as Halloween approaches. Ruth Wilson brings an eerie quality to the reading that emphasizes the narrator's descent into insanity. A chilling examination of madness and the darkness at the depths of the human soul. A good reading of the classic available free with the Audible Plus catalog that can be enjoyed in less than twenty minutes.

Historia
In his critically acclaimed novel Under Heaven, Guy Gavriel Kay told a vivid and powerful story inspired by China’s Tang Dynasty. Now, the international best-selling and multiple award-winning author revisits that invented setting four centuries later with an epic of prideful emperors, battling courtiers, bandits and soldiers, nomadic invasions, and a woman battling in her own way, to find a new place for women in the world - a world inspired this time by the glittering, decadent Song Dynasty.

Enjoyable Epic Fantasy
Revisado: 09-12-20
This is another enjoyable epic fantasy from the combined talents of Guy Gavriel Kay, the writer, and Simon Vance, the narrator. The River of Stars is a sequel set centuries after Under Heaven in the fantasy world of Kitai. This fantasy version of China has progressed from the glory and fall of the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty era with the invasion of tribes from the northern steppes. The setting continues to be rich and detailed, the writing remains poetic, the scope is still epic, and the politics interesting. The world of Kitai feels very lived in with both a complex past and future. The only downside is that the female character cannot compete with the female characters in Under Heaven. This volume is slightly inferior to Under Heaven but is still overall a great sequel or independent read with a top tier narrator in Simon Vance.

There are more than 320 million Chinese between the ages of 16 and 30. Children of the one-child policy, born after Mao, with no memory of the Tiananmen Square massacre, they are the first net native generation to come of age in a market-driven, more international China. Their experiences and aspirations were formed in a radically different country from the one that shaped their elders, and their lives will decide the future of their nation and its place in the world.

Insight into the Millennial Generation in China
Revisado: 09-07-20
As a millennial myself, I was interested in the lifestyle and attitudes of my peers in China. This book provided insight into the lifestyle and attitudes of Millennials in China by exploring the lives and formative experiences of a handful of young men and women known personally to the author in China. In that way it had many of the engaging, personal qualities of a memoir. Good for helping to visualize the billion plus Chinese people as individuals with their own experiences and attitudes. This book focused on the personal and so ended up communicating something about the collective. A valuable insight into China's millennial population.
